Moreover, it is the aspect of grasper and grasped. The Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, and Cittamatra schools assert that there is truly birth in the ultimate sense through the manner of dependence on others. The reasoning for this meaning is: By the nature of the completely imputed, all phenomena are without birth. If one abides in dependence on others, people's conceptual thoughts will arise. So they say. But this is unreasonable, because it is evident in the sutras that there is no birth from dependence on others. Furthermore, in the Holy Sutra Unraveling the Thought, considering the lack of inherent existence of characteristics, the lack of inherent existence of birth, and the lack of inherent existence of the ultimate, I have said that all phenomena are without substance, without birth, without cessation, peaceful from the beginning, and all phenomena are naturally completely in nirvana. What is the lack of inherent existence of the characteristics of all phenomena? It is the characteristic of the completely imputed. Why is that? Because it is the characteristic established by names and conventions, but it is not the establishment of the self-characteristics and common characteristics of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena such as aggregates and elements by their own characteristics. Therefore, it is called the lack of inherent existence of characteristics. What is the lack of inherent existence of the birth of all phenomena? It is the characteristic of dependence on others of all phenomena. Why is that? Because it arises from the power of other conditions, but not by itself. Whatever is without self is without birth. For that which is without birth, there is no inherent existence, therefore it is called the lack of inherent existence of birth. What is the lack of inherent existence of the ultimate of all phenomena? It is the characteristic of the perfectly established of all phenomena. It is also called the lack of inherent existence of the ultimate. Why is that? Because the lack of self of phenomena is their lack of inherent existence, and their ultimate truth is distinguished by the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, therefore it is called the lack of inherent existence of the ultimate. For example, just as a flower in the sky, so should the lack of inherent existence of characteristics be viewed. Like this

For example, just as an illusion is created, so too should one view the absence of inherent existence in birth. For example, just as the form of space is distinguished and completely pervaded by its mere absence of inherent existence, so too should one view ultimate absence of inherent existence, which is distinguished and completely pervaded by the absence of self of phenomena, as being the same. The Blessed One said, "Considering these three types of absence of inherent existence, I have taught that all phenomena are without inherent existence." Not only in scripture, but also how should it be shown through reasoning? When things arise, do they arise from a cause that is their own nature, or from a cause that is other, or from something that is different or not different, or do they arise without dependence on cause and effect? With or without a cause, does a designation and a fragment produce one thing of action, or does it produce many things, or does it produce one nature of oneness, or does it not produce many natures, or does a fruit arise from a destroyed cause, or does a fruit arise from an undestroyed cause? Such manifold discriminations will arise, and all those factions merely think that the suppositions established by striving supremely with attachment to their own factions are the very essence. Moreover, the fruit that has become the nature of the cause is the very same as the cause. Therefore, it will not arise from it, because it arises in the same way as the nature of the cause, so the fruit that is considered impure birth becomes the master, and the cause called the chief is without birth, so like a rabbit's horn and so on, it does not possess the nature of a cause. Moreover: "Since that which is self-same is not other, the cause becomes not a cause. Since it is unborn, with respect to whom what is not a cause becomes a cause?" This is what is said. The term "other" is also spoken in relation to two things. The second thing here is the fruit. When the cause exists, it does not exist, because it does not exist. So, in dependence on what is it called "other" to them in reality?
