What is the power of a Bodhisattva's patience? For the conduct of a Bodhisattva, with the power of wisdom equal to the sound of an echo in a valley, one does not repeat previous actions. Even if threatened and beaten, understanding it to be like an illusion, one does not threaten or beat back. Even if scolded, understanding the mind to be like a magic trick, one does not scold back. Even if angry, with the power of knowing inner purity, one does not become angry back. With the power of pure worldly dharmas, one is not robbed by worldly dharmas. With the power of knowing the purity of dependent origination, one is not crushed by all defilements. Thus, a Bodhisattva sees as many doors of conflict as doors of peace. This is called the power of patience. Then, what is the power of a Bodhisattva's wisdom? A Bodhisattva's aggregates, elements, sense bases, and consciousness are empty, unborn, and unceasing. With the wisdom that perfectly accomplishes the enlightenment of the Buddha, all non-Buddhists and those with objects of focus, and all demons, even if abiding in the form of the Buddha, cannot doubt that wisdom. This is called the power of a Bodhisattva's wisdom. Then, what is the power of a Bodhisattva's renunciation? When a Bodhisattva dwells in one place, all sentient beings gather before him, saying unpleasant things, speaking disagreeable words, using harsh language, speaking vulgar words, and disparaging the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Bodhisattva does not become angry with those beings, nor does he become unhappy, nor does he regret, nor does he harbor malice. Even if the body is cut and chopped, he does not generate malice in the same way. He also establishes those sentient beings in the Three Jewels. This is called the power of a Bodhisattva's renunciation. Then, what is the power of a Bodhisattva's learning? Here, a Bodhisattva is one who has heard much, is learned, holds much, and has accumulated much learning like an ocean. A Bodhisattva possesses the power of learning and is like an example. Even in a three-thousand great thousand world system,

All related sentient beings hold doubts. Having arrived in the presence of the Bodhisattva, instead of asking like one sentient being, all of them simultaneously ask various different questions with doubts, but the Bodhisattva answers them all without hesitation. Even if asked for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, the Bodhisattva will prophesy in the same way. This is called the Bodhisattva's power of learning. Then, what is the Bodhisattva's power of fearlessness? If the Bodhisattva teaches the Dharma in the midst of hundreds of thousands of kotis of retinues, he will not think randomly, but will teach the Dharma and allow them to hear according to the wishes of each sentient being. The Bodhisattva's Dharma teaching will not have any loss of meaning, will not have any loss of words, will not be repetitive, will not be obstructed, and will not be interrupted. This is called the Bodhisattva's power of fearlessness. Then, what is the Bodhisattva's power of merit? If the Bodhisattva dwells under a tree, or dwells in a temple, or dwells in an empty house, and all the demons and their retinues come to try to create obstacles and harm, those demons themselves will feel fear, dread, and confusion and leave. They will realize that they are helpless and run away. When the swords of those demons, the two-pointed weapons, the three-pointed spears, the stones, and the axes fall, they will, by the blessing of the Bodhisattva's merit, turn into Mandarava flowers, Champaka flowers, Sala flowers, Utpala flowers, and lotus flowers and fall. The harsh and rude words of those demons will be heard as praises to the Bodhisattva. For the Bodhisattva, the six unpleasant objects will never appear. With just a thought, all his perfections will arise from the sky. Moreover, by the power of his own merit, all perfections will arise from the treasury of the sky and the Jewel-in-Hand, thereby nourishing all sentient beings. By the power of his own merit, the life of the Jewel-in-Hand will last for a kalpa. Even if spoken, the Bodhisattva's power of merit is not easy to fully understand.

This is called the power of merit of a Bodhisattva. What is the power of practice of a Bodhisattva? The power of practice of a Bodhisattva is of ten kinds. What are the ten? They are: the practice of giving, the practice of ethics, the practice of patience, the practice of diligence, the practice of meditation, the practice of wisdom, the practice of means, the practice of aspiration, the practice of power, and the practice of wisdom. These are the ten practices of a Bodhisattva. All the practices of the Bodhisattvas that are endowed with perfections are to be regarded as included in these ten practices. What is the practice of giving of a Bodhisattva? A Bodhisattva has nothing that he does not give to sentient beings, except for the Dharma of giving that would harm sentient beings. With what mind does a Bodhisattva give? Only the Tathagata and the Bodhisattva who has attained patience can easily believe in that mind, let alone understand it. This is called the practice of giving of a Bodhisattva. What is the practice of ethics of a Bodhisattva? The practice of ethics of a Bodhisattva is of ten kinds. What are the ten? They are: the practice of the ethics of the Hearers, the practice of the ethics of the Solitary Buddhas, the practice of the ethics of the Bodhisattvas, the practice of the ethics of the Bodhisattvas' vows, the practice of the vows of the ethics of gathering all virtuous Dharmas, the practice of the ethics of not abandoning the search for virtuous friends, the practice of the vows of the vows of upholding the sacred Dharma, the practice of the vows of constantly accomplishing the benefit of others, the practice of the ethics of completely dedicating to enlightenment, and the practice of the vows of constantly abiding in equanimity, the practice of the ethics of patience that destroys the connection of habitual tendencies.
