I truly observe, this is for the sake of perfecting the inexhaustible diligence of the mind, whatever enters and abides, and is free from all characteristics, and it also enters into all the actions of characteristics, and the actions of wisdom truly abide, from that everything should also do the actions of wisdom. So, what is the action of wisdom of a Bodhisattva? Whatever is the cause of the root of virtue, and the cause of great compassion for all sentient beings, and does not abandon conditioned things, nor regard it as the cause of non-Buddha wisdom, this is called the inexhaustible perfection of diligence of Bodhisattvas. Thus, as it is said, the perfection of diligence is complete, that is, the great diligence is tamed. This is what it is called. The difficult-to-tame ground of a Bodhisattva is to practice the perfection of meditation even more, therefore, it is called: Great meditation, abiding in Samadhi. Moreover, there are four meditations, from the common ground of all Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas, Bodhisattvas become the great image of thought, what is that? Here, the Bodhisattva is separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, with joy and happiness born from separation, and abides in the perfection of the first dhyana. Therefore, desires are the unfavorable aspect of the first dhyana, which is separated from those cravings. So, sinful and unwholesome dharmas are greed, hatred, and delusion, from that root there is killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, covetousness, malice, and wrong views. This is called sinful and unwholesome dharmas, being separated from those is the first dhyana. Being together with investigation is having investigation, what are those investigations? Whatever investigations are in accordance with the first dhyana, thinking according to the ritual, and all of those are tamed, therefore those are called investigations, which is knowing and understanding and analyzing.

And the utmost pondering and making into samadhi is pondering. What is investigation? It is said that investigation is the investigation and various investigations, the near enjoyment and the universal enjoyment, and the making into samadhi of those ponderings that are in accordance with the first dhyana, and the mind following after. That which is together with them is the first dhyana that is together with pondering and together with investigation. Because joy and happiness are born from solitude, therefore it is said that joy and happiness are born from solitude. To abide having perfected, the meaning of having perfected is to swallow and to cause to swallow, and to conceal and to cause to conceal, and to taste and to be manifestly joyful. If a Bodhisattva abides in that first dhyana, he obtains the desire and aspiration to comprehend the tolerance of non-arising dharmas, and with that desire and aspiration for the tolerance of non-arising dharmas, he does not regard the first dhyana as the essence. He undertakes the second dhyana, he pacifies and nearly pacifies those ponderings and investigations of the first dhyana. From them, the mind becomes extremely tranquil, and he seeks the cause for the complete accomplishment of the second dhyana. Because he is separated from pondering and investigation, he is completely clear within, and because the continuum of the mind becomes one, the second dhyana, which is without pondering and without investigation, and endowed with joy and happiness, abides having been perfected. That which is completely clear within is that whatever dharmas are the opposing factors of that second dhyana, those are nearly pacified and clear. Therefore, it is said to be completely clear within. That which becomes one continuum is that all those ponderings and investigations of the first dhyana are completely pacified, and like the water of the ocean, it attains becoming one taste. For example, just as the waters that flow into the great ocean become one taste of salt, so too, when a Bodhisattva enters into the equipoise of the second dhyana, all those ponderings and investigations of the first dhyana are pacified and become one taste. That is samadhi. From that samadhi, he generates joy in the Buddha and the Dharma and the Sangha. Because of joy in the Three Jewels, he perfects all virtuous dharmas.
