The characteristic of earth is discipline. That which does not cut off the lineage of the Buddha through the Dharmakaya, does not cut off the lineage of the Dharma because of the indivisibility of the Dharmadhatu, and does not cut off the lineage of the Sangha because of the distinction of the unconditioned, that is discipline. Oh, son of Sharadvati, the inexhaustible discipline is seen because of the inexhaustible continuum. Why is that? The discipline of ordinary beings is exhausted by the places of birth. The discipline of those with the five superknowledges of outsiders is exhausted by the decline of superknowledge. The discipline of humans is exhausted by the exhaustion of the path of the ten virtues. The discipline of the sons of gods in the desire realm is exhausted by the exhaustion of merit. The discipline of the sons of gods in the form realm is exhausted by the exhaustion of immeasurables and meditative absorption. The discipline of the sons of gods in the formless realm is exhausted by the exhaustion of birth in whatever state of equipoise they have entered. The discipline of all learners, non-learners, and Shravakas is exhausted at the end of Nirvana. The discipline of solitary Buddhas is exhausted by being separated from great compassion. Oh, son of Sharadvati, the discipline of Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that? Because all disciplines arise from this discipline. Oh, son of Sharadvati, for example, obtaining an inexhaustible seed is inexhaustible. Oh, son of Sharadvati, likewise, because the seed of the mind of enlightenment is inexhaustible, it should be known that the discipline of the Tathagata is inexhaustible. Therefore, those noble beings are called inexhaustible discipline. Because they hold such great discipline, they are the chief of all who hold discipline, therefore they are supreme. The Bodhisattva, the illuminator of the earth, especially practices the perfection of patience. Therefore, it is said: The great holder of patience, the tamer. Also, the patience of Bodhisattvas is observed in thirty-two aspects. What are the thirty-two? Patience is observed by abandoning latent tendencies. Patience is observed by not harming. Completely not afflicting

The thirty-two sons of Venerable Sharadvatiputra, thus observe the patience of the Bodhisattvas. What is patience? It means that because one knows that all things are like the sound of a valley, one does not act again in action; because one knows that the body is like an image, one does not strike again in striking; because one knows that the mind is like an illusion, one does not scold again in consciousness; in order to pacify the superior intention, one does not become angry again in anger; in order to perfect one's own qualities, one does not become angry because of non-praise; in order not to think of what has not been heard, one does not become attached to praise.
