It is called pure because it is free from defilements. Washing with external water is spoken in relation to the views of the heretics, that is the difference. Having six superknowledges means that whoever has six superknowledges is called having six superknowledges. So, what are the six superknowledges of a Bodhisattva? The divine eye, the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, knowing past lives, the ability to perform miracles, and knowing the exhaustion of outflows. These are the six superknowledges of Bodhisattvas. So, what is the divine eye of a Bodhisattva? Accumulating all virtuous qualities without diminishing, without attachment, without limit, without obstruction, without location, without flaw, without delusion, unshowable, without fault, not common to all worldly people, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas, completely destroying all connections of habit, seeing clearly, predicting clearly. With the divine eye, one sees beings, sees death and birth, sees good colors and bad colors, sees inferior and superior, sees how karma approaches, sees causes and results, and sees everything as it truly is. That divine eye enables one to attain the wisdom of the Buddha, and that is certain. So, what is the divine ear of a Bodhisattva? The divine ear is without obstruction, accumulating all pure qualities, surpassing ordinary people, Indra, Brahma, the world protectors, gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, surpassing all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, without interruption, luminous, hearing all sounds. One can hear the sounds of gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, as well as thunder, the sound of mosquitoes, the sound of ants, the sound of flesh flies, the sounds of noble ones and the sounds of non-noble ones. Having heard them, one does not become angry at the sounds of non-noble ones, and for the sounds of noble ones

Nor will they be attached to it. They do not ultimately perceive the sounds of ordinary individuals; nor do they perceive the sounds of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas as sacred. They do not become angry at non-noble behavior, nor do they become attached to noble behavior. They do not perceive any sound as virtuous or faulty. Otherwise, all sounds are like the echo of a rock, empty, unmoving, without self or belonging to self, and solitary, merely thoroughly understood. The ear's source of arising does not strive, nor does the sound's source of arising strive. Such is the divine ear of a bodhisattva. Furthermore, a bodhisattva's knowledge of others' minds, possessing the ability to fully understand their own mind, thoroughly understands the mental conduct of all beings. They accurately and thoroughly understand the minds of other beings and individuals who possess attachment as minds possessing attachment; and they accurately and thoroughly understand minds without attachment as minds without attachment. Having understood this, they do not become angry at those with minds possessing attachment, nor do they become attached to those with minds without attachment. Instead, they generate great compassion for those with attachment and great love for those without attachment. Similarly, they accurately and thoroughly understand minds with and without hatred, minds with and without delusion, minds with and without craving, minds with and without grasping, minds with and without affliction, minds with and without measure, minds in samadhi and not in samadhi, and minds not liberated and liberated. Having understood this, they do not become angry at beings whose minds are not liberated, nor do they become attached to those whose minds are liberated. Instead, they generate great love for those whose minds are liberated and great compassion for those whose minds are not liberated. Even knowing all beings, they do not become arrogant with their own mind towards those minds.

And there is no arrogance. Therefore, the one who knows the minds of others thoroughly understands the behavior of the minds of all sentient beings. These sentient beings will not know until the Bodhisattva reveals it, and even the divine wisdom of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas cannot know it. What need is there to mention that ordinary people will not know it? This is the Bodhisattva's ability to know the minds of others. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva remembers many past lives of himself and other sentient beings. He remembers even one life. He also remembers two lives, a hundred lives, a thousand lives, a hundred thousand lives, and even billions of countless immeasurable lives. He also remembers the eon of destruction. He also remembers the eon of formation. He also remembers the eon of destruction and formation, up to billions of countless immeasurable great eons. Except for the Tathagata and the Bodhisattvas who abide on the ten bhumis, the world with gods will be confused by this. For example, 'I, so-and-so, became like this. My caste was this, my lineage was this, my complexion was like this, my name was this. My food was this. My lifespan was this long. My stature was like this. I experienced such happiness and suffering. From there, I died and was reborn in such-and-such a place. From there, I died again and was reborn here. My caste is this, my lineage is this, my complexion is like this, my name is this. My food is I eat this, my life can last this long, my stature is like this, I experience this kind of happiness and suffering.' Thus he remembers. Just as with himself, so it is with all sentient beings, even bees and ants remember. That memory of his is without attachment, uninterrupted, without obscuration, without hindrance, without being urged by time, fully endowed with great love and great compassion, profound, difficult to fathom, without latent tendencies, the connection of habitual tendencies is completely pure, it is merit.
