I take pride as arrogance, and generate hatred towards those who abandon others' views or preconceived notions in their own minds. The order of these is like that. Each affliction arises from three causes: If subtle latent tendencies are not abandoned, and there is improper attention, and the object is present, then afflictions arise from the power of cause, object, and combination. These cause the body and mind to become afflicted, hence they are called afflictions. What are afflictions? Those are also near afflictions, but different from those black qualities, the mental phenomena that arise, belonging to the afflicted formations aggregate, those are the very afflictions themselves. What are those? They are flattery, pride, vexation, miserliness, resentment, deceit, and so on, various kinds that arise from one's own mind. Now, flattery is deceiving others. Pride is being attached to one's own qualities such as appearance, youth, lineage, discipline, learning, etc., disregarding others, and the mind is completely fixated on this. Vexation is striking with hands, sticks, or staffs, or verbally abusing others with harsh words. Miserliness is clinging tightly to things that should not be clung to, therefore not accepting reasonable teachings. Resentment is constantly increasing the objects of harm. Deceit is having a cunning mind, therefore turning from one place to another, leading astray, not allowing it to be clear. Among these, flattery and pride are the similar cause of desire, following desire, and are called relying on the category of desire. Resentment and vexation are the followers of anger. Miserliness is the similar cause of pride in views. Deceit is the similar cause of wrong views. What is cunning like? As the verse says, it is the view of the wicked. There are ten kinds of all entanglements: torpor, sleep, excitement, regret, jealousy, stinginess, shamelessness, and lack of embarrassment.

as well as lethargy, anger, and concealment. Among them, lethargy is when the body and mind are not fit for work, and it is synonymous with "sluggishness." Sleep is when the body and mind are unable to maintain themselves, and when the mind is withdrawn. This is also a type of affliction, and therefore it is universally bound and dwells. Excitement is when the mind is not peaceful. Ill-doing is regret. Here, the dharma arising from the mind that is based on this is called regret, which is synonymous with "remorse in the heart." Naming the result by the cause, just as the dharma based on the unpleasant is called unpleasant. In the world, the place is also indicated by the place, such as saying that the whole village has come. This is also an affliction, and therefore it is universally bound and dwells. The characteristics of jealousy and stinginess have already been explained. Shamelessness is disrespect towards virtues and those who possess virtues, and it is the antidote to respect. Lack of shame is not fearing what should be blamed. What should be blamed is what is blamed by the noble ones, and it is the place of falling into the lower realms. Anger does not refer to hatred and harm, but rather to universally harming sentient and non-sentient beings. Concealment is hiding what should be blamed. Because the mind is universally and tightly bound and dwells, therefore it is universally bound and dwells. Among these, lethargy, sleep, and lack of shame are of the same kind as ignorance. Regret arises from the cause of doubt. Shamelessness, excitement, and stinginess are of the same kind as desire. Anger and jealousy arise from anger. Concealment is of the same kind as desire and ignorance. These ten stains are also called near afflictions. The cause of the dharmas arising from the mind is subtle, and if it flows continuously, it cannot be distinguished, let alone the moments? Those who have the wisdom to understand the nature of the Dharma spoken by the Blessed One can truly and accurately know their kinds by seeing the differences in their fruits. But those who do not attend to and respect the virtuous teachers who expound the Sugata's scriptures, those with erroneous wisdom, cannot know. Similarly, illusion, pride, harm
