It is emptiness. Why is that? Because its nature is such. External dharmas are empty by internal dharmas. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the emptiness of the external and internal. Then, what is the emptiness of emptiness? Because of impermanence and non-destruction, whatever is the emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness is empty by that emptiness. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the emptiness of emptiness. Then, what is the great emptiness? Because of impermanence and non-destruction, the east is empty by the east. The south is empty by the south. The west is empty by the west. The north is empty by the north. The direction below is empty by the direction below. The direction above is empty by the direction above. The intermediate directions are empty by the intermediate directions. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the great emptiness. Then, what is the ultimate emptiness? The ultimate is nirvana, because of impermanence and non-destruction, nirvana is also empty by nirvana. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the ultimate emptiness. Then, what is the emptiness of conditioned phenomena? Conditioned phenomena refer to the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Then, because of impermanence and non-destruction, the desire realm is empty by the desire realm. The form realm is empty by the form realm. The formless realm is empty by the formless realm. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the emptiness of conditioned phenomena. Then, what is the emptiness of unconditioned phenomena? Unconditioned phenomena refer to that which has no birth, no cessation, and no change other than abiding. This is called unconditioned phenomena. Because of impermanence and non-destruction, unconditioned phenomena are empty by unconditioned phenomena. Why is that? Because its nature is such. This is called the emptiness of unconditioned phenomena. Then, what is the emptiness of transcendence of extremes?

Eye and the gathering of eyes have contact, tongue and the gathering of tongues have feeling because of contact, body and the gathering of body have feeling because of contact, mind and the gathering of mind have dharma because of contact, dharma with form and dharma without form, conditioned dharma and unconditioned dharma, these are called emptiness of all dharmas. Therefore, because of impermanence and non-destruction, all dharmas are empty by all dharmas. What is the reason for that? Because its nature is like that. This is called emptiness of all dharmas. Then, what is self-nature emptiness? Form is the nature of destruction, feeling is the nature of experiencing, perception is the nature of grasping, formation is the nature of manifest formation, consciousness is the nature of distinguishing, and because of impermanence and non-destruction, whatever is the nature of conditioned dharmas, and whatever is the nature of unconditioned dharmas, with those respective natures, all those dharmas are empty. What is the reason for that? Because their nature is like that. This is called self-nature emptiness. Then, what is invisibility emptiness? In which, the past is invisible, the future is invisible, and the place where the present arises is invisible, because of impermanence and non-destruction, invisibility is empty by invisibility by invisibility. What is the reason for that? Because its nature is like that. This is called invisibility emptiness. Then, what is non-substantial self-nature emptiness? Because all dharmas are dependently originated, the nature of gathering is non-existent, because of impermanence and non-destruction, gathering is empty by gathering. What is the reason for that? Because its nature is like that. That is called non-substantial self-nature emptiness. Therefore, by understanding the suchness of the sixteen emptinesses, one can realize the sixteen suchnesses. It is said like this. Furthermore, by understanding the aspects of the twenty emptinesses including the four emptinesses, one can realize the twenty aspects, and become the perfectly enlightened omniscient supreme wisdom. It is said like this. Moreover, Subhuti, furthermore, things are empty by things.
