And in order to perfect great compassion, he observes the arising of the world and the beings of the world. When he observes the arising and destruction of the world, he thinks thus: All the beings who wander in the world arise from attachment to self. If one is free from attachment to self, arising will also cease to exist. Ignorant beings, because they do not understand attachment to self, are obscured by the extremes of existence and non-existence and by wrong beliefs, and are devoted to inappropriate mental activity, deeply immersed in wrong views, and follow wrong paths. They accumulate virtuous and non-virtuous actions. The seeds of consciousness, which are tainted and associated with grasping, are ripened by these actions, leading to the manifestation of future birth, aging, death, and rebirth, drawing near to their occurrence. This is because the basis of the field of action, the darkness of ignorance, the oil of existence, and the aspects of views moistened by the pride of 'I', together with the increase of memory, cause the sprout of name and form to arise; having arisen, it grows. When the sprout of name and form grows, the five faculties arise. When the five faculties arise, they gather and meet each other, and thus contact arises. When contact gathers, feeling arises. After feeling, craving arises due to intense longing. Craving causes grasping to increase. When grasping increases, existence arises. When existence arises, the five aggregates arise, and having arisen, the five aggregates gradually circulate in the five realms of existence. Having circulated, they separate. Circulating and separating cause displeasure and extreme suffering. Due to displeasure and extreme suffering, sorrow, lamentation, pain, discomfort, and confusion arise, yet no one causes these to arise. They naturally and spontaneously decay, yet no one causes them to decay. Thus, the great Bodhisattva thoroughly understands dependent origination in accordance with the proper way.

Thinking thus: Not knowing the truth is true ignorance. The maturation of actions done by ignorance is the formations. The first mind abiding in the formations is consciousness. The four aggregates of grasping arising simultaneously with consciousness are name and form. The increase of name and form is the six sense bases. The union of the three, faculty, object, and consciousness, with defilements, is contact. What arises after contact is feeling. Attachment to feeling is craving. The increase of craving is grasping. The defiled actions arising from grasping are existence. The result corresponding to action and cause is birth. Birth is the arising of the aggregates. The complete maturation of the aggregates is aging. The destruction of the aggregates after aging is death. The masses who die and are separated, whose minds are confused and attached, and who are completely tormented, are sorrow. The words arising from sorrow are lamentation. What is experienced by the five faculties is suffering. What is experienced by the mind's view is displeasure. The frequent arising of suffering and displeasure is disturbance. Thus, the great mass of suffering, and the emptiness of suffering alone, will be manifestly attained without an agent or experiencer. He thinks thus: Because of manifest attachment to the agent, actions exist. Where there is no agent, then in ultimate reality, actions are also not found. He thinks thus: Thus, these three realms are only mind. Whatever these twelve branches of existence are, the Tathagata has well distinguished and taught, all of them also abide in one mind. Why is that? Whatever object gives rise to a mind with attachment, that is consciousness. The object is formation. Confusion about formation is ignorance. What arises simultaneously with the mind of ignorance is name and form. The increase of name and form is the six sense bases. What is related to the six sense bases is contact. What arises simultaneously with contact is feeling. What cannot be satisfied by feeling is craving. Tormented by craving, suffering!
