If there is dullness or distraction, one should first engage in this kind of transformative meditation. The phrase "like the first day of the moon" means to examine one's own mind in that way. The phrase "empty inside" means to visualize the mandala of the moon, which is full of space, with the characteristic of the first day. Some say, "One should visualize the mandala of the moon from the clear letter A (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: A)." But here, there is no such stipulation. Why? Because the meaning of A is unborn, and it pervades the meditation that examines the selflessness of phenomena and persons. And here, it is to show this miracle of birth, therefore, it is reasonable to only visualize this from the essence of selflessness. Others say, "This teaching only mentions the mandala of the moon, and does not distinguish between being empty inside and being full inside, so why say this?" Because the Bhagavan, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sarvarthasiddha, said, "When he attained enlightenment," and so on. Its meaning is as stated above, that the great Bodhisattva Sarvarthasiddha was born among people as the son of the Shakya clan's king, showed the great talents of a man such as craftsmanship and knowledge, showed deeds that surpassed those of his peers, and in order to show the way to become a Buddha through mantra, when he was dwelling in the great emptiness, the unmoving samadhi, in a bad Buddha-field, all the Tathagatas gathered together, appeared there, deliberately showed the complete enjoyment body, and then unanimously said to that Bodhisattva, "Noble son, because you have not realized the suchness of all the Tathagatas, you are weary of all austerities, and how do you intend to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?" Thus he spoke. The Bodhisattva Sarvarthasiddha, he

Through the power of the encouragement of those Tathagatas, he arose from that samadhi, prostrated to those Tathagatas, and spoke thus: "O Blessed Ones, what is the suchness of all the Tathagatas? How should I accomplish them?" After he had spoken, those Tathagatas spoke thus: "Realize your own mind and remain in equanimity. Recite and remember this naturally accomplished mantra as you wish." Having said this, at the time or moment when he realized his own mind in stages, first, by seeing his own mind abiding in the form of a moon, etc., it was the time when he became enlightened as the Tathagata called Vajradhatu. The ritual that will appear below refers to the order of becoming enlightened in this way as a ritual, that is, the order that will appear below. He spoke thus to the Tathagatas: "O Blessed Ones, Tathagatas, I see my own mind abiding in my own heart in the form of a moon mandala." The Tathagatas spoke: "Son of the lineage, this mind is naturally luminous, and changes as it is tamed, just as a white cloth is changed by color." After generating the Bodhicitta, it is said that then again those Tathagatas spoke thus: "Son of the lineage, from there, may the Tathagatas cause you to generate the Samantabhadra Bodhicitta." After the Bodhisattva generated the mind in this way, he saw his own mind in the form of a full and complete moon mandala, and spoke thus: "Tathagatas, whatever the form of the moon mandala is, I see it as the moon mandala." Again, the Tathagatas fully blessed those who had thus attained enlightenment. The Bodhisattva, through the stages of realizing his own mind, the fruit manifested, that is, the body of the Tathagata called Blessed Vajradhatu, his great mudra manifested.

It became like that. Therefore, here too, it is clearly shown the meaning of that reasoning's intention: From generating the mind of enlightenment, it is to perfect the appearance of emptiness within the lunar disc. "To the Thus Gone Ones" refers to those Thus Gone Ones who were assembled at that time. "Whatever the aspect of the lunar disc is, it is seen as the lunar disc itself" is the word of the Bodhisattva's clear experience through his own wisdom of realization. Among them, "What is the aspect of the lunar disc?" refers to the characteristic of the crescent moon, the state of being not full. "Seeing the lunar disc itself" refers to the characteristic of the full moon and being completely perfect. Here, the words "Whatever the aspect of the lunar disc is, it is seen as the lunar disc itself" express the saying "the aspect of the lunar disc," and indicate "as the mandala itself," which is the manner of indicative language. "The aspect of seeing the lunar disc is revealed to be the unfulfilled lunar disc" indicates that the above is only the crescent moon. So, what does it reveal? Because it was later said, "Because the lunar disc itself is seen," according to the meaning indicated later, it is revealed in that way. The objector says: Then, why not show those all at once, but why does it appear in this order? If it is a Bodhisattva, then their intention is like this, and so on. "Having abandoned all the corners of the dust of the habits of cyclic existence" means that, in this way, having previously realized the selflessness of phenomena and persons through reasoning, all the corners of the dust of the habits of cyclic existence, such as clinging to self and what belongs to self, are completely covered. That Bodhisattva completely abandons them through the stages of realizing the mind. Even if it has begun, it will not be filled because the cause of being completely perfected has not been accumulated, because it possesses the habits of white Dharma accumulated from beginningless time that have not fully grown.
