I, if speaking from the tantra: Through the rituals desired in the mind, whatever is desired in the mind will be accomplished. It abides in the heart of meditative practice, therefore it is called the essence. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that if the deities desired in the mind are accomplished, and the actions and rituals for accomplishing what is desired in the mind are undertaken without interruption, then the desired accomplishments in the mind can now be realized. The so-called essence is the nature of the samadhi of all the deities, therefore the practice of samadhi is the nature of all Tathagatas, and because it abides in the heart, through repeated familiarity with the form of the letters called the essence, one can realize the mind called the essence. The so-called essence is that, whichever deity one wishes to meditate on and accomplish, the letters of its mantra, whether a single letter or many letters, one must understand and familiarize oneself in detail with these different aspects of visualization, and thereby one can realize the mind called the essence, therefore it is called the essence. Then, what nature should be understood here? That is, what is said here is the great mandala of the Vajra realm, called Vajrasattva (བཛྲ་སཏྭ།,Vajrasattva,金刚勇识), Vajraraja (བཛྲ་རཱ་ཛ་,Vajrarāja,金刚王), which is to show the samadhi of the Tathagatas and great Bodhisattvas such as Vajrasattva, therefore it is called the essence. Then, when will this essence be remembered? This essence will also be remembered at two times, thereby realizing the mind called the essence, and so on. Now, these two times are: when one wishes to achieve accomplishment, and when one meditates on the samadhi of one's own deity. That is, at the time of accomplishing the desired accomplishment, it refers to the time when one accomplishes the desired accomplishment from the earth and so on mentioned here. The so-called time of meditating on the samadhi of one's own deity refers to the stage of reciting beforehand at the time of accomplishing the desired accomplishment, and the stage of practicing samadhi. The so-called characteristics of possessing its place, body, color, etc., refer to the path of meditating on any samadhi, and the place of that samadhi, including lifespan, body, and color.

When one has a foundation and wishes to accomplish the desired attainments in mind, one should recite the essence of Vajrasattva (བཛྲ་སཏྭ།, Vajrasattva, 金刚萨埵) and so forth, and hold it in mind. Or, if one becomes familiar with it and recites it, it is said to abide in the essence. Similarly, the definition of mudra is also said, just as the definition of essence is explained, so too should the definition of mudra be explained. That is, it is said in the tantras: "Difficult to transgress, likewise indestructible, the king's seal is the supreme sign, the great self's form with marks, therefore it is proclaimed as mudra." Here, "Difficult to transgress, likewise indestructible," means that it is difficult for others to transgress it, and opponents cannot destroy it. What is it? "The king's seal is the supreme sign," which means the seal of command established by the king himself. Just as when the king's seal is affixed, neither the king himself nor his ministers can transgress or destroy it, what need is there to mention others? "The great self's form with marks, therefore it is proclaimed as mudra," which means that the form with marks of the great self is shown as mudra. Even the great selfs do not use methods of destroying or transgressing, what need is there to mention demons and other heretics? This is what is said. To further explain these meanings, here it speaks of the great self, the supreme body, and so forth. Regarding the definition of mantra, it is said in the context of the tantras: "Not to be transgressed, difficult to destroy and secret, because it is praised for secret accomplishment, therefore it is called mantra." Here, "Not to be transgressed," means that it is not an object to be transgressed by anyone. "Difficult to destroy and secret," means that it cannot be destroyed by opponents such as demons and heretics, and it is difficult to understand, therefore it is secret. "Because it is praised for secret accomplishment," means that its accomplishment must be kept secret from those who are not vessels and do not possess the proper conditions, and then it can be accomplished, therefore it is called mantra. These meanings are further explained as, here it is praised and spoken secretly, and if combined with the definition, then
