Therefore, where does one reside? Or does one's own mind reside in equanimity? Indeed, the true form of things is not seen. In the interval taught by the holy guru, it is like the body and its shadow; it is not seen in the darkness. Just as it becomes visible when shown by the sun, moon, and lamp, so too, the inconceivable realm of Dharma is not seen. Therefore, it is not seen there. Seeing it is being skilled in meaning. If one does not see it, then in the words and terms of scriptures and treatises, all the wise ones explain the treatises, but they do not see the mind itself that dwells in the body. Not realizing the immeasurable qualities of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind that dwell in the mind itself is like the jewel of a universal monarch's mother or the empty jewel of a giant in the womb of a poor woman. The inconceivable mind itself that is inherently present within oneself is not realized. By thinking and meditating and striving for bodily color and hand gestures, one does not realize that the Buddha is present in the body. If one realizes it, then there is not even a particle of difference between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. If one realizes it in this way, then the mind is at ease. It is like the story of the old Brahmin and the elephant, and the man who can subdue the elephant, and the hook-wielder. The conceptual thoughts of memory are like an elephant. The non-conceptual non-thought is like a man. The unborn realm is like a hook. Realizing that these are like stolen wealth, beyond the mind, without end or increase, because the elephant is tamed and the mind is satisfied, the yogi who realizes in this way, Is like cutting water with one's own rope. The memory of conceptual thought is absorbed into the realm. There is no hope or doubt in that. What is called Buddha is just a name. There is no going or coming from anywhere. Therefore, it is peaceful, having cut off going and coming. If one realizes that the continuous meditation that never ceases dwells within oneself, then there is no need to seek it elsewhere. Having realized it in this way, there is no place to ask about anything. Although one is skilled in external scriptures and treatises, one does not gain benefit from the pride of memory. Therefore, although one strives for words, one does not realize the meaning. Therefore, the wise do not realize it because they are shameless. It is not an object of realization.

Its very nature transcends birth, aging, sickness, and death, not relying on any causes and conditions, hence being without dependence. Any living thing that has not been transformed, being without beginning and free from the bondage of concepts such as existence and non-existence, how could it age and die? As taught by the venerable Guru, realizing the inseparability of equipoise and post-equipoise is unharmed by karma, afflictions, and the obscurations of knowledge. The stainless wisdom taught by the Guru equally applies to the suchness of all sentient beings in the three realms and all Sugatas of the three times, without diminishing or increasing. Like the treasure at the tip of an elephant's trunk, it is the true treasure; what else could it be? Now, I shall illustrate with the example of a crow flying from a pond. There are two kinds of realms: external realms, such as forms, which are not established as real, should not be relied upon by the mind; internal realms, which depend on conditions, should not be relied upon by memory. Memory should be understood as emptiness with characteristics, and for the internal realm, the realm itself is pure and cannot be indicated. Non-conceptual emptiness should be practiced in the manner of focusing solely on the absence of memory. One should act with emptiness alone. Since the knowable is not established, there is no dwelling for knowledge. Since knowledge and the knowable are not established, the name "mind" is also not established. Even if memory arises from it, one should not cling to characteristics at that time. For example, just as merchants who wish to cross the ocean place a crow by the pond, so too, if yogis wish to cross to the other shore of samsara, they should use the crow of memory as a watchman. Just as a crow flies from a pond, just as a crow returns to the pond because it does not see any land, so too, the crow of memory circles and circles in the realm of no-memory, no-birth, beyond mind, and eventually returns to it. Now, I shall illustrate with the example of a rope being mistaken for a snake. False yogis, by meditating on the impurity of external objects, abandon them and cling to experiencing inner awareness, which is like two strands of rope twisted together, like a black rope, but not truly existent. Meditating on impure objects is like a black snake.
