The four grounds. Because the first cause of the fruit is different from the stages of the path, it is said. From what point does one begin to engage fully in the accumulation of merit and wisdom, such as generosity, with the prior holding of vows? This is the mind of engagement. As it is said: Just as one who wishes to go knows the distinctions of going, so should the wise know the differences in number. As it is said. Here, abandoning the perfection of wisdom, that is, the means of truly gathering all virtues such as generosity, which manifest, is the accumulation of merit. Wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom because it completely cuts off the object of means by itself. Therefore, with the right means and undeluded intelligence, one accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others as it is. Thus, the reality of means and wisdom should be revealed, even by those who have entered the grounds. As the Blessed One said: A foolish person says this: "Enlightenment can be attained by only one way, which is the way of emptiness." As it is said. Moreover, by realizing the nature of means and wisdom, one realizes the non-abiding Middle Way, which is free from imputation and defamation. Wisdom is for abandoning imputation. Means is for abandoning defamation. Here, first, one should generate the wisdom that arises from hearing, so as to ascertain the meaning of the scriptures. Then, one should separately examine the reasoning and scriptures that arise from contemplation, and meditate on the true meaning by ascertaining the definitive and provisional meanings. The very nature of not being truly born. This should also be understood through the reasoning of the teachings. Therefore, the yogi should first accomplish calm abiding in order to stabilize the mind. Through calm abiding, one abides properly without relying on gain and so on, and generates diligent effort by enduring suffering and so on. As it is said: Whoever possesses discipline is patient. Whoever has steadfast diligence is mindful. Whoever is perfectly endowed with truth, his samadhi will be quickly perfected. As it is said. Therefore, abiding in the accumulation of calm abiding such as discipline

In a place suitable to the mind, straighten the body and sit on a comfortable cushion, with great compassion as the guide, generate a single-pointed mind. Regarding this, first the yogi should, to the best of their ability, take as their object of focus the suchness of all the different phenomena of the five aggregates, twelve sense bases, eighteen elements, and form or formless things. Determine that it is empty of the nature of one and many, and repeatedly saturate the mind with this continuum, until body and mind attain extreme pliancy. Having attained extreme pliancy, calm abiding will be perfected. As it is said: One should closely focus on all things, the aggregates and so on, distinctly grasping their emptiness. If the mind thoroughly enters into that, then one will be greatly endowed with samadhi. So it is. Then, again abiding in samadhi, one should examine all phenomena with the eye of wisdom. Having examined, one should again cultivate in stages. By this, the seeds of doubt will be eliminated. Similarly, by focusing on calm abiding, the mind will become stable. From examining with wisdom, the light of true wisdom will arise, like light in the darkness, and by this, one will abandon the obscurations. Therefore, these are like what is seen with the eye. True wisdom arises, because they are definitely established by their respective qualities. They are not mutually contradictory like light and darkness. By the words called "wisdom that is truly equipoised." Uniquely, calm abiding that is in accordance with wisdom. Its meaning is the path endowed with the union of calm abiding and insight, and the entering mind endowed with skillful means such as generosity and moral conduct, which is renowned as the way of the Perfection of Wisdom. This excellence is that, through the stages of samadhi such as light, obtaining what corresponds to the decisive factors such as warmth, is the stage of application. Then, obtaining the path of seeing is the stage of the cause. Then, through the stages of cultivation is the stage of the result. Thus, these various distinctions of the way of the Perfection of Wisdom of the entering mind are the views of Kamalaśīla.
