It is. The characteristics of a student should be explained as to how one becomes. For example, if someone enters a boat and learns well how to steer, they can cross the great ocean, otherwise they cannot cross. Similarly, one should have a lama, the Three Jewels, and also possess bodhicitta, and have compassion for the world. This is said to be a boat. The lama is a wise person who is skilled at steering, and the boat can completely guide everything. For those who want to cross samsara, Vajrasattva (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ་སེམས་དཔའ།) spoke these words. Without steering, the boat cannot cross. Even if one fully understands all the qualities, without a lama, one cannot reach the end of existence. Therefore, it is necessary to always honor yogis with steadfast conduct, those who possess the nature of both inner and outer. All actions such as prostrations should be done diligently at all times. One should have wisdom and firm faith, and have compassion for beings. Without anger, without deception, adorned with qualities such as generosity. With great enthusiasm and diligence, always act according to the lama's instructions. Even if not asked, offer possessions and other things according to one's ability and means, and similarly, offer food and clothing, etc. Even if despised, one should endure without discouragement in one's heart. One who understands the scriptures and reasoning is a student who possesses all qualities. Having the nature of non-discrimination, one who does not ask about anything, saying that one cannot learn, this was spoken by the Buddha himself. For example, just as children throw mud into the air and play as they please, similarly, anyone who is controlled by others is not a vessel for the supreme Dharma. This concludes the fourteenth chapter on the characteristics of a student from Yeshe Drubpa. The true nature, as previously explained with wisdom, that which resides in all tantras, now I will speak a little from that. In the world, there is the name of a thief, appearing for a small profit, and some even call themselves thieves, and the tantras are similar to this. The Buddhas who benefit beings, for those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties, indicate with different letters and proclaim the corresponding Dharma. Saying only that, or saying two words, some are attached to the senses, and some say other dharmas.
