These are the views of annihilationism and eternalism. Here, following the teacher's Nirvana Sutra, one should refute the self with its own nature. The naked non-Buddhists consider the self to be a truly existent entity. If asked, is it a conditioned phenomenon or an unconditioned phenomenon? If it is a conditioned phenomenon, it will become impermanent; if it is an unconditioned phenomenon, the entity will perish. Furthermore, the eternal self spoken of by the Samkhya proponents is it a real thing or a non-real thing? I should examine it. If it is said to be a non-real thing, then the eternal self will perish. If it is said to be a real thing, then does that eternal self perform a function or not? If it is said that it does not perform a function, then whatever cannot perform a function is like a flower in the sky. If it is said that it does perform a function, does it do so gradually or all at once? If it performs a function gradually, then it will become impermanent; if it performs a function all at once, then even small abilities could perform the actions of a hero. The view of annihilationism is also unreasonable, because it arises after cessation, and because there is no deception between before and after. It will not become the nature of annihilation, therefore externalists are unreasonable. There are three types of internalists: the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the Bodhisattva Vehicle. The Hearer Vehicle is that which, having removed the defilement of the self of the person, considers the self of phenomena, the apprehended and the apprehender, to be truly existent. For them, this external object is believed to be formed from the aggregation of many indivisible, spherical, egg-shaped atoms into a coarse mass. These should be understood as childish behaviors. Whether those atoms are adhered, surrounded, or exist without gaps, if they are divided by six directions, then not even one atom will be established, and if one is not established, then many will not be established either. Thus, if one and many are not established, then the external object will also not exist. Solitary Realizers are those who believe that external objects are completely non-existent because they are harmed by one and many, and that the internal grasping, awareness, is truly existent. These are also not true, because the consciousness that grasps an object when the object is not established is never reasonable. For example, when white is not established,

The knowledge of holding is impossible to arise. If the god Sūrya has a staff, then it is reasonable to call him a staff-bearer distinguished by the staff. If the god Sūrya does not have a staff, then it is not reasonable to call him a staff-bearer. The bodhisattva's vehicle has two: the Yogācāra and the Mādhyamika. The Yogācāra has two: the true aspect and the false aspect. Among these, the true aspect school believes that the various appearances of white and red are true in the appearance of knowledge. They believe that the knowledge that is free from the self of person and phenomena is the ultimate truth. If it is divided, there are two: one believes that although it appears as various, it is true in the essence of one knowledge; the other believes that although it appears as various, it is also true as various. The first is also unreasonable. If the object and knowledge are two, are they one or different? If they are one, because there are various appearances, knowledge should also become various. If the object and knowledge are different, why would they not become Śrāvakas? The second is also unreasonable. Just as the object is harmed by valid cognition, why would it not harm knowledge? Furthermore, is this wheel of appearances apprehended by deluded knowledge or by non-deluded knowledge? If it is apprehended by deluded knowledge, then the vow of the true aspect school is broken. If it is apprehended by non-deluded knowledge, then all beings should be able to see the truth. The view of the false aspect school should also be understood as two: the knowledge of seeing this shore and the wisdom of nirvāṇa. The wisdom of nirvāṇa should also be understood as two: defiled self-awareness and pure self-awareness. According to the defiled principle, the various wheels of appearances do not appear in the face of equipoise, but are believed to appear in subsequent attainment. According to the principle of pure self-awareness, it is believed that there is no wheel of appearances in the subsequent attainment of the arising of the path of seeing. Knowing only through experience is not reasonable in any way. In any case, O Yogācārin, is your ultimate knowledge existent after arising or existent before arising? If it is existent after arising, does it arise from itself or from another? If you say it arises from itself, is it already established or not established? What is already established does not need to arise again, and what is not established cannot arise. If you say it arises from another
