Therefore, these fourteen root downfalls, like the vital point of all mantras, are inexhaustible places, so be sure to protect them with great effort. If you see a violation, you should remedy it as described. Otherwise, just as the seed of a palm tree dries up, the remaining yogas and so on will not be able to produce fruit. So, even if one has completely violated the precepts, if one cultivates with the mind of enlightenment, one will achieve it, so do not be discouraged, one should strive to cultivate, how should this be understood? Cultivation itself can be learned from downfalls, or because of the first empowerment, or because of compassionately embracing those who have given up hope, that is why it is said. Therefore, in this case of distinguishing the root downfalls, I have only made a brief distinction of the scriptures, and have not elaborated on them in detail. Those who wish me to do better, please respectfully enter this excellent oral instruction of the lineage master and please the master. Similarly, in this tantra and others, a student who respects the master should not speculate with his own intelligence, but rely on the master. Those who are condemned for boasting of being proficient in secret mantras and being complacent because they have seen scriptures do not know this. Now the branch downfalls are shown: One should not beg and wander, this is because one should not beg because of attachment to food. Yoga union is the samadhi of the deity yogi. The so-called secret mantra is: ཧྲཱིཿ་ཥྚྲྀཿ་(Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः ट्रीः, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: hrīḥ ṭrīḥ, Chinese literal meaning: sha, zha). The so-called samaya substances, etc. are: five meats, five elixirs and divine food, etc. If one despises the master, such as if a root downfall occurs, then one should re-enter the mandala and receive empowerment, as it is said: When a root downfall occurs, in order to purify it, enter the mandala, after obtaining permission, the great one will also become small. Therefore, it is said like this. The so-called faithful is to have faith, because for people without faith, white dharma will not arise, just as a seed burned by fire will not grow a green sprout. Therefore, this verse was said. The so-called master is to respect him, as it is said in the Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra: For example, the sun and the moon, illuminate the world.

One should not regard others as wise. Likewise, for this person, one should regard this teacher as an eye. For example, the element of fire burns all firewood. Similarly, the so-called teacher burns inauspicious firewood. For example, the element of water cuts off all suffering in the world. Similarly, one should know that the teacher can also cut off all suffering. For example, the element of wind constantly accomplishes everything in the world. Similarly, the teacher accomplishes virtuous deeds for the disciples. Just as the abode of all sentient beings is known as the earth. Similarly, for all dharmas, the teacher is known as the abode. Just as the Bhagavad-gitas manifest light and understand all dharmas. Similarly, the so-called teacher understands all dharmas. Just as the glorious Vajradhara holds all secrets. Similarly, here, the teacher holds the secrets of secret mantras. That which is praised by the Three Jewels should always be spoken. The great praise of all Bodhisattvas should also be spoken. For example, the Buddha Bhagavan is the guide and eye of the correct path. Similarly, for the fearless mantra, it is also the guide and eye of this Mahayana path. One should regard the mantra practitioner as me. Do not regard me and the mantra practitioner as different. One should take the teacher's merits, and one should never take faults. If one takes merits, one will attain accomplishment. If one takes faults, one will not attain accomplishment. Similarly, life will also be shortened, and one will fall into evil destinies. Those who slander the teacher will be born into the lineage of fishermen, etc. Even if one commits all sins, the wise should not slander the guru. Those who desire the Dharma should always please the teacher. Wherever the son of Gyala resides, the land where he resides will become a stupa. There, I and the sons of Gyala have no difference or distinction. Thus it is said. Some recite, "One should have faith in the guru." The three kinds of reverence for the guru shown here are done from the perspective of body, speech, and mind, or, for greater reverence, they are repeated. These three reverences refer to abandoning (disrespect) first. The so-called guarding of vows is not to abandon vows,
