Otherwise, how could it only occasionally produce its own fruit without obtaining the distinction of its own nature? Thus it says: Whether those are capable or incapable, those abiding in their own nature, because of being permanent, are not nourishing, what is the capacity for exhausting them? Thus it is said. This also refutes "mind". Those who speak of mind say that mind is to be inferred from the non-arising of consciousness in an instant, but from the consciousness experienced in an instant in going, looking, and so on. If that is so, then it will never be reasonable. Therefore, space and so on are merely non-existent. If it is said that earth and so on remain, then that can also be analyzed into two aspects by the distinction of having parts and atoms. Among these, having parts is non-existent, and atoms are also non-existent, because there is no proof for either of them. Just as the harms to them are stated in order, namely, "beginning, end," and so on. Cloth and so on are not famously existent as the nature of having parts, composed gradually by two or more atoms. Why? Because form and so on are seen to be devoid of a single coarse nature, with distinctions of beginning, end, middle, and so on, which contradict each other. Thus, this states the reason for the non-observation of objects of the nature of being mixed with a single consciousness, which has the characteristic of being observable. Thus, thus, only the changing parts appear, and the other partless ones associated with them do not exist. Even if one limb turns to the right or left, the part-having that includes it will also be seen to turn or move. But if the limb turns and moves, but the part-having does not, then it will be seen to turn and not move. When one limb is obscured, it will inevitably become invisible. If it is not obscured, then it will be difficult to avoid the fault of becoming visible. Thus, since contradictory qualities of different entities exist, it is not appropriate for the part-having to be one, so it is seen that the time has come for this to become an object of the term "non-existent." Thus, having refuted one, now the nature of many remains. That is also many

They speculate in various ways. For example, the Vaibhashikas believe that it is primarily the object of the root consciousness, the Vaisheshikas believe that it is the very thing that composes the limb-possessing, and the Sautrantikas believe that, like a meat-eater, it is always hidden and capable of creating its own image. This is like the view regarding atoms. To refute the atoms speculated by the Vaibhashikas, it is said, "Subtle atoms, etc." Just as the gross does not exist, so too does the multitude not exist. The reason stated is, "Because subtle atoms are not seen." The nature of atoms being mutually different is because they are not perceived. If it is said that because the gross is not reasonable in other ways, one should follow the atoms, then the statement is, "If the atom is partless, etc." The thought is this: First, atoms should not be considered as having parts, because the contradictory points are that they are connected with contradictory qualities such as the ten directions and the six combinations, and therefore they would become many like the gross. If the atom is partless, that is, if the nature of the limb is without parts, then the many atoms would not be able to surround, that is, they would not be contained within the many. If it is surrounded by atoms in this way, then the one located in the center of the atoms above and below and in the four directions will inevitably become six parts, because whichever of its natures is close to another atom, that atom will not be able to approach other atoms, because they would become the same place. If it is also there, then the nature of being close to the eastern atom will also be close to the western atom. If there is no closeness, then even just the appearance of observation is this closeness. Therefore, the nature of the mass will become just atoms. The nature of the earth, etc., no accumulation will exist here. As it is said: Adhesion and surrounding, or, even if residing without gaps. The central atom, for a single atom, what is the nature of what is observed?
