It is the object posited by concepts. Therefore, if it is true that all such things have a true, inherent difference, then selflessness exists by virtue of selflessness. If the nature of existence and peace are not different, how could that be? That is not the case. There are two kinds of clinging to self: that which arises from manifest action and that which is co-emergent. Among these, the belief that the self is distinct by virtue of the body, etc., that it is the agent who performs virtuous and non-virtuous actions and experiences their results, and that it is permanent and pervasive, is openly proclaimed as "I." This is cultivated through familiarity with treatises such as those of the Vaisheshika school, etc., and arises from manifest action, such as that of the Vaisheshikas. The nature of clinging to the self, which relies on the stream of consciousness due to the power of the habitual tendencies of beginningless ignorance, is co-emergent. It is common to all sentient beings and belongs to each individual. For the first view, there is no valid cognition that establishes the existence of a self. Self is not cognized by direct perception, because the objects of the eye and other consciousnesses are specifically determined as forms, etc. It is also not cognized by inference, because there is no sign of effect or nature. Because the self is always hidden, separate from place and time, and because the entity that produces and acts with the nature of some co-existent and disappearing self and other is not established, there is no sign of effect. Furthermore, because the subject of the property is not established, the sign of nature is unreasonable. There can be no other sign to establish the existence of what is to be inferred. Even if there is another sign, if it needs to be distinguished by what is established, since the self to be established is not established at all, it is not determined as pervasive, so it is impossible to determine that anything is pervasive by it, so no sign arises here. Eye and other consciousnesses or inference are not what can establish it, but the self with the nature of cognizing "I"

To dispel the doubt that "perception as proof is merely existence," it is said, "I," and so on. "I," which is the object of self-awareness, such as the self other than the mind, does not exist at all; it is non-existent. Because the object recognized as "I" is form, etc., the thought of "I am" arises in the manner of "I am thin, I am fat, I am going," and so on. Thinness and fatness themselves are not qualities separate from the body. For that which is pervasive and not corporeal, the act of going, which follows corporeal substances, is also unreasonable. Therefore, because there is no valid cognition that proves the existence of "I," it transcends being able to be called existent; and because there is valid cognition that negates it, it is only non-existent, this is certain. If "I" exists, then is it of the nature of awareness or of the nature of non-awareness? If it is the former, then it is difficult to avoid the fault that the eyes, etc., are without effect. For the self that always aims at form, etc., the existence of the eyes, etc., is not with effect. Even if "I" is of the nature of non-awareness, it is negated because the existing entity cannot be observed. Therefore, this is only non-existent, this is certain. Furthermore, to dispel the doubt of "How can the innate view of the aggregates as self be established in all the world, and how can it be denied?" it is said, "I," and so on. The necessity is this: As it is said, because all entities of the nature of the knower and the known, etc., do not exist, "I," which is the constant object of grasping at self, and the nature of the grasper at self, etc., as it is said, nothing other than the mind of that nature exists; it is non-existent. Therefore, since "I" does not exist in any way, viewing it as self, like the cognition of hair, etc., is not of true meaning. Therefore, since the absence of self is not non-existent, but exists in existence and things, existence and the things of peace are not different, nor are they without obstruction. Next, to explain the unreasonableness of what is said, it is said, "Because of what."
