So, where is the investigation to be done? The arising of mind is merely an appearance. For example, it is like the appearance of the sky, etc., when a wall collapses. What does that mean? There, the word "mind" refers to emptiness, because it is the nature of mind. If the characteristics of emptiness, etc., are briefly summarized and established, what is that? It should be said: Emptiness is of all phenomena, it is the emptiness of duality. With the characteristic of non-duality, it is all of one taste. Because it is emptiness, it is not a thing either. Because they are things, they are not non-things. The body is a thing, so it is not other. By nature, it is not other. Because the nature of mind is constant, it is said to be like the arising of the sky. From meditating on its expression, the approximate expression is conventional truth. With non-elaboration wisdom, the defilements are uprooted from the root, and when the adventitious defilements are exhausted, self-nature purity is purity. If external objects have no meaning, then how do these blue colors, etc., appear? They appear as the meaning of unreal objects born from the power of habit, like the consciousness of a dream. The Blessed One also said: Just as a child imagines, for the sake of meaning, it does not exist. The mind disturbed by habit will appear as meaning. It is said that being disturbed by habit is being damaged. If it is known that these are only consciousness and not external objects, just as the consciousness of a dream appears as that thing, it is not so even when awake, because only blue and other things appear, and the meaning of mere metaphor is not established, then it should be said here that for this, clarity and appearance, experience, and non-materiality and non-obscurity are the characteristics of realization. Blue and other things are also experienced, and there is nothing other than that experience. Therefore, blue and other things are also established as the nature of realization, and precisely because of this, it is established that it is not the nature of an external object, because it contradicts materiality and appearance. Here, some thinkers say that the dharma of things is clear, which refers to oneself.

If it is true through experience, then that is also done by knowledge, but it is not the characteristic of knowledge. Therefore, that is the dharma of things, and the cause that makes it manifest—knowledge—is the dharma of persons, if you say so. That is also unreasonable, because the self-nature of things is not common to all people. For example, red cloth appears red only to the dyer himself, but to others it appears white, it is not like that. Then what is it? Because red is for everyone, so whoever makes the dharma of things manifest, it will be seen by everyone, because that is the dharma of appearance for everyone. Therefore, except for the situation where everyone cannot see it, if only one person sees something, then it will be seen by everyone. Others say that non-material and manifest are the characteristics of awareness, and that is realization. That is also the dharma of persons, not the dharma of things, because the knowledge of persons can perceive and grasp the external of things, so it is realization. Therefore, things are manifest, and manifest is made manifest by knowledge, if you say so. That is also unreasonable, because the characteristic of manifest, as mentioned before, is experience, and that is not the dharma of blue and so on. It and manifest are not the same, so other things cannot do it either, because if it is not manifest by itself, it cannot be made manifest by other things. To be made manifest by manifest, and not to be manifest are also contradictory. If it is not manifest by itself, what fault is there in being made manifest by the manifest? If that is the case, manifest will become the dharma-nature of things, therefore, that is not the view of the epistemologists, and that kind of fault has already been mentioned. Therefore, blue and so on are the self-nature of appearance, appearing, so it is only consciousness that is empty of grasper and grasped. This is its foothold. Here is the verse: What is not manifest does not appear, others also cannot make it appear. Blue and so on are appearances, therefore it is non-dual knowledge. Furthermore, cloth, rainbow, walls, and other appearances, are these one or many? If it is one, then the differences between the beginning, the end, and the middle parts cannot be determined, because there is no difference.
