The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are always in a state of equipoise. Thus it is said. Therefore, with regard to the four modes of conduct, such as walking and abiding, the Bhagavat are always in a state of equipoise, which is also explained elsewhere, and is ultimate. Again, in order to explain the Madhyamaka view, (Verse:) Conventional and ultimate, If one knows their separate parts, Where they are truly merged, That is explained as union. Thus it is said. The nature of sound and conceptualization is conventional, and other than that is ultimate. Among them, some Madhyamikas believe that conventional and ultimate are independent of each other, and that they are also different from each other, because they are contradictory. Some Madhyamikas who advocate annihilation believe only in the ultimate truth, because the conventional is falsely existent like a magical person. Some believe that only the conventional is like an illusion, and do not accept the ultimate truth, because it does not perform any function. Whatever performs a function is the conventional truth, but even the conventional, which is like an illusion, becomes aimless when analyzed. This shows that all these views are mistaken because they fall into two extremes. Those who know that the conventional and the ultimate are merged will realize union. As it is said: Form is emptiness, emptiness is form, form is not different from emptiness, and emptiness is not different from form. And so on, these are all spoken from the Mother of the Buddhas (Prajnaparamita Sutra). In order to explain the aspect of generation stage, (Verse:) Not an object of suchness, Nor does it arise anywhere, That is the nature of union, Abiding by the inexhaustible yogi. Thus it is said. The yogi of the generation stage, first, there is no object and no meditation. In the verses such as, all moving and non-moving objects are meditated upon as emptiness, and then enter into suchness. After that, it arises from the order of the wind mandala and so on. The stage of union is not the existence of these two, but suddenly, like a fish leaping out of the water of the Tsangpo River...

It is to obtain the body of perfect conduct. Therefore, it is said, "The place of the inexhaustible yogi." This means that although there is no intention of "one disappearing and another arising," it shows that it is the inexhaustible place of the nature of the three bodies. This is the ultimate with the common meaning as the guide. In order to explain the aspect of the stages focused on the mind, it is said, "Sleep and wakefulness, abandoning those two, being separate from the sleep and wakefulness of the two, is shown as union." This means that the teacher, the Great Glorious Vajradhara, has thus proclaimed the stages of union, which is the connection of the words. How is it? "Separate from sleep and wakefulness," sleep and wakefulness are the absorption of all natures and the manifestation of luminosity, and are separate from them. For what reason? Sleep is called the disappearance of all natures, and wakefulness is called the shining of the luminosity of the mind, in order to abandon those two discriminations. "It is union, it is the hidden meaning, it is the ultimate of those with essence." In order to explain the aspect of the generation stage, it is said, "Equanimity and non-equanimity, in whom all these are absent, abandoning existence and non-existence, the yogi is the place of union." This means that the yogi abides in the stages of union, which is the connection of the words. What is that union? In what stage is there no equanimity and non-equanimity? Among them, equanimity is from the initial union, etc., up to the distinctions of the hundred families, practicing the thirty-eight samadhis as much as possible. Similarly, non-equanimity is abiding in the intervals between the pride of the gods, etc. These two are not present in the stages of union, because equanimity and distraction are of one nature. It should be known that such a yogi abides in the stages of union. And how is it? "Abandoning existence and non-existence," this means that those who assert the later existence at the time of the category of things of their own nature, and other categories, and non-existent things, are considered by worldly heretics, etc.
