Fifth, the stages of union. Fifth, the stages of union. Now, in order to compose the stages of union, I will explain the homage to the great Vajradhara. The protector is the nature of cause and effect, abandoning all duality, after paying homage, I will write the ultimate stage of union. Thus it is said. For the sake of those who desire liberation to seek. The protector is the sixth, after paying homage to that, I will write the stages of union, this is the connection of the words. How should it be written? Without completely abandoning the Middle Way. What kind of stage is it? The so-called ultimate, means that there is no further stage than this, this is for the sake of the path of no more learning. As it is said: Abiding in the samadhi of union, one no longer learns anything else. Thus it is said. What kind of protector is it? The so-called nature of cause and effect, the cause is the four stages such as Vajra recitation, and the fruit is the fifth stage, their nature is in whatever exists, that is as it is. Among them, in the four stages such as Vajra recitation, there are also neuter recitation, as well as the luminosity of the mind, the illusory body, the luminosity of self-nature, etc., which are no different from this, this is a concluding statement. That is because the two truths, and the fruit of non-difference, are not pervaded by even a little, because it abides as it is, pervading all defilement and purification. Therefore, it is said: Abandoning all duality. That is, it is separated from the mutually contradictory dharmas such as existence and non-existence, which will be explained below, it is the ultimate of the essence of suchness. In order to explain it in many ways, samsara and nirvana, abandoning the two concepts, where things become one, it is said to be union. Thus it is said. With the distinction of cause and effect, union is of two kinds. Among them, the cause is also distinguished by Sravakas etc., and many kinds have been explained before. According to the views of other schools, the difference between cause and effect is that the suchness of the nature of the Samkhya school is the cause, and the twenty-three suchness are the fruit.

Thus, for the true nature of a person, appearing as non-different is samsara, and appearing as different is liberation. Similarly, those who speak of Brahma consider the aspect of action to be samsara, and the certainty that "all these are Brahma" to be liberation. Similarly, the non-Buddhists, such as the peaceful ones, also understand samsara and nirvana, and declare that wherever there is no conceptualization of both samsara and nirvana, that is union. Because the nature of conventional and ultimate reality are non-dual, like the sweetness of brown sugar and the hot touch of fire. This is also the reason of the nature of phenomena, that samsara and nirvana are non-different. This is the ultimate essence of the general meaning. In order to explain the Hinayana school, it is said: "All afflictions and purifications, If one knows their ultimate nature, Whoever unites them is called, That one knows the union." That is to say, afflictions refer to desire and so on, and purification refers to the path without outflows and so on. Whoever knows that these are one in the ultimate sense, he knows the order of union. Because if one examines the afflictions, the senses and so on are not found. Purification also depends on the side of afflictions, so they are established like each other's length and shortness, which is the ultimate essence of the general meaning. In order to explain the Yogacara school, it is said: "All conceptualizations with objects, All conceptualizations without objects, The yogi uses them as one, That one knows the union." That is to say, whatever appears, that is the aspect of consciousness, because it does not deviate from appearance. Appearance is the body of consciousness, so these are its aspects. The appearance of external and internal forms as separate grasper and grasped is mistaken like a dream, which is the tenet of those who speak of consciousness with aspects. Since the aspects are all false, their separate appearance is also without cause. The clear intelligence without aspects, like pure glass, is that of the consciousness-only school.
