Who are those who tie leaves and hair into bundles and wander from place to place? The naked ones are those who take vows of non-attachment, wear the clothes of the sky in a mad guise, and conduct themselves in that way. The so-called "head-touchers" are those who shave their heads and possess the discipline of monks, novices, etc., and guard the places of learning in monasteries, etc. The hair and beard of those who dwell in monasteries must not exceed two fingers' length. It is said that shaving their hair is mandatory. The so-called "crest" refers to those who keep only a topknot and, relying on the discipline of virtue or the discipline of a layperson, guard the places of learning. Abandoning assemblies refers to those who, having acquired the qualities of practice, abandon worldly assemblies and strive diligently to abandon desire, etc., by meditating on ugliness. In the Hearer's Ground of the Yogacara school, how does one possess the qualities of practice? Namely: almsmen, those who are devoted to alms, those who eat in one sitting, those who do not accept leftover food, those who wear three Dharma robes, those who wear felt clothes, those who hold dusters, those who dwell in aranyas, those who dwell under trees, those who have no covering, those who dwell in cemeteries, those who always sit, and those who dwell wherever they are. These, through the steadfastness of alms, Dharma robes, and dwellings, become twelve or thirteen qualities of practice. Among these, alms-gathering itself can be divided into two types: those who accept what they obtain and those who are devoted to alms. Those who accept what they obtain are those who, in order to increase virtue, eat whatever food they obtain and receive. Those who are devoted to alms are those who go from house to house begging from people, eating whatever alms they obtain and are suitable, and thinking, "I should obtain abundant and satisfying food and drink from this," and saying, "Please give," without approaching the crowd. Therefore, if alms are not distinguished, there are twelve, but if one relies on distinction, there are thirteen.
