This realm of consciousness is inexhaustible because it relies on the realm of Dharma. Because it remembers the body of the previous support, this realm of consciousness is complete with wisdom. This realm of consciousness should be regarded as similar to sunlight. For example, sunlight shines on filth and rotting corpses, which are impure, and also shines on fragrant things such as lotuses. However, it does not arise with the thought, "This is fragrant," nor does it abandon impure things to approach the sunlight. Similarly, this realm of consciousness takes birth in places where impure things are eaten, such as pigs, but the realm of consciousness is not stained by those faults. Is what is said in this way true? Answer: It is true, and this is not contradictory to the Sutra Pitaka. Why? In this way, consciousness causes the body to move, and this is because it is united with the mount of wind, so one should follow this distinction. However, if it is said: At the time of death, how does it wander to another place of birth, separated from the five great elements? At that time, it is because there is no wind. One should not say that, because the intermediate state being (gandharva) only possesses subtle aggregates of senses, and is not just one. The body sense, which is included in the subtle aggregates of senses, is the nature of the four elements, so there is wind, and therefore it is propelled by it. Alternatively, the habitual tendencies of attachment and hatred propel it like a spring of mantra power. Master Vasubandhu said: At that time, whichever of the two minds, the intermediate state being and the mind combined with the anger that taints it, manifests. Also, when propelled by the wind of karma, there is no contradiction in wandering in the six realms. Therefore, the wind called life is the mount of consciousness. It is the nature of the fivefold division of aggregates, namely, life wind, downward-moving wind, fire-accompanying wind, upward-moving wind, and pervasive wind. Among these, the life wind is the heart.

Where does it reside? The downward-moving air resides in the anus. The upward-moving air resides in the secret place. The one that dwells with fire resides in the navel region. The pervasive air resides in all the joints of the limbs; this is the distinction of dwelling places. The nature of Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, Amoghasiddhi, and Vairocana is said to be the deity itself. From the stream of the sense gates, life and diligence move, and moving in constant time is said to be life. Wind, urine, feces, and likewise semen, etc., the yogi should always practice the downward-leading downward-moving air. Laughter, eating, licking, completely drinking and sucking, whatever constantly dwells together, is called dwelling together. Going upwards and gathering, eating food and tasting, etc., together with awareness, the yogi should know this as the activity of the upward-moving air. Pervading and holding oneself, going likewise returning, because it pervades all the joints, this is called pervasive. This is called the distinction of actions. Life is blue, likewise, the downward-moving air is declared to be yellow. Dwelling with fire is red, likewise, the upward-moving air is said to be green. The pervasive air is white, or it is said to be pale yellow like the moon. Life is the alaya consciousness, the afflicted mind is the downward-moving air. Dwelling with fire is the manifestation of consciousness, the upward-moving air is the root of the mind, it is the nature of the entering consciousness. This is called the pervasive air. Life is the aggregate of consciousness, the downward-moving air is said to be the aggregate of feeling. Dwelling with fire is the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formation is explained as the upward-moving air. Because the aggregate of form is pure, the pervasive air is universally proclaimed. During the day and night, from the body's left and right sides, and both, slowly and in both, these are truly said to be moving. At the time of death, the fifth one will arise from the dead body. The water element is the life air, earth is considered the downward-moving air. The fire element is the upward-moving air, the one dwelling with fire is called wind. The space element is pure, the pervasive air resides in all the joints of the limbs.
