It is said that these are non-dual things. The samadhi that yogis contemplate is said by the Blessed One to be union. This is to show that the words of the Blessed One are valid, not a hidden meaning. In order to refute the views of all opponents, (it is said in the sutra): "Who abandons the views of permanence and annihilation, and dwells well in this? Who knows the order of union, who is the wise one?" Similarly, any non-Buddhist opponents who are bound by the view of self are the cause of the poisonous tree of samsara, another kind of permanence, that is, abiding on the path of the extreme of permanence. They cannot be liberated from the bonds of samsara because they do not fully understand the path to liberation. Some Vaibhashikas and others think that their own skandhas and so on are extinguished, just as a lamp dies when the oil is exhausted, and they desire a nirvana like a lamp. But they do not have the happiness and joy of benefiting sentient beings, so they transcend the two valid cognitions and desire a liberation with the characteristic of annihilation. They will not be liberated either, because the nature of liberation is completely impure. Because of understanding the reality of luminosity, all things are made into one taste, and in this samadhi, the views of permanence and annihilation are abandoned and do not abide on any side. Whoever knows and realizes this order of union is the wise one, the yogi who sees things as they are. It should be said like this. It is also said in the Precious Garland of Royal Advice: "After fully understanding the benefit of self and others, constantly with the actions of body, speech, and mind, after fully observing, acting, this is the wise one. Selflessness will not become existent, and mine will not become non-existent, therefore children will be afraid, and the wise will exhaust existence." And so on, these are not hidden meanings. That is: understanding that wisdom and compassion are one, and thereby entering well, this is said to be union, this order is the realm of the Buddhas. It is said in the sutra that wisdom refers to that which arises from hearing and thinking.

There are three types: arising from hearing, arising from thinking, and arising from meditation. Among them, those arising from hearing and so on are with an object of focus, while what is attained after that is without an object of focus. Compassion has three aspects: focusing on beings, focusing on phenomena, and being without focus. The first two are with an object of focus, while the last is without focus, and that is great compassion. Wisdom and compassion are one, knowing and realizing that they are without difference, the yogi enters into it and benefits sentient beings, that is the realm of the Buddha, the order of union of the Thus-Gone One, this is said to be provisional meaning. Or, wisdom is the seal of wisdom. Compassion is glorious Vajradhara, the great seal, and knowing and realizing the oneness of their absorption, whichever yogi enters into it. By the order of emanation, benefiting beings through the emanation of different mandala wheels, that is the order of union, the realm of the Buddha who does not abide in nirvana, the twelfth bhumi is to be attained, this is to be explained as definitive meaning. Or, wisdom is ultimate bodhicitta. Compassion is relative bodhicitta, and those are one. With the limb of Vajradhatu, knowing and experiencing the one taste, whichever yogi enters into it, abiding in the suchness of the great bliss of co-emergent bliss, that is the realm of the Buddha, the union of one's own nature to be thoroughly understood by the measure of self-cognizant direct perception, this is not intentional. Or, wisdom is the perfection of wisdom. Compassion is the five perfections, and their oneness is accomplished through the gate of the three circles being completely pure, having known and accomplished in that way, whichever yogi enters into it, that yogi who causes to enter into generosity and so on, that is the order of union, the order of non-duality being manifest, and the realm of the Buddha, is the Thus-Gone One.
