There are five types of individuals. Among them, this is the kind of person who is like sandalwood. A person with a deceitful mind is one who deceives regarding merits and so on. A person with laziness is one who is lazy in hearing the Dharma. To those teachers who are endowed with hearing the Dharma, they slander them, saying, 'He has not taught me anything at all; I am completely endowed with wisdom on my own.' This is what they say. Thinking that they have received empowerment, they are filled with arrogance. Then, if some wise people advise, 'You should diligently practice on the path!' At that time, they harbor a disheartened mind, thinking that 'omniscient ones are not easy to find,' and they have little faith. Similarly, those who see the faults of the guru, that is, the teacher, but do not see the qualities, are the kind of people who are like sandalwood. This needs to be stated again: They desire to attain without respectful listening, and they speak words that are not gentle but leave in anger. If they see the guru in the assembly, they turn their backs on him. If they go to a secluded place, they will prostrate to him. Wanting to listen respectfully and serving for that purpose is also respectful listening. Abandoning these, not possessing these, quickly, that is, with an easy method, through the path of doubt, they want to attain the suchness of skillful means. If the guru knows that this person is deceitful, in order to dispel his doubts, he speaks with gentle words, saying that it is not so. When he says this, he becomes angry and then leaves, that is, runs away. If they see their guru in the assembly, that is, see him in the midst of a crowd, they turn their backs on him, that is, cover their heads and hide. If they go to a secluded place, and in that secluded place they are alone, if they see the guru, they will prostrate and pay homage to him. Because they do not bestow kindness on him. Such a base disciple with an evil nature, even if he is one's own son, or of a noble lineage, whether of the royal lineage or the aristocratic lineage, even if he is of the highest birth, he should never be kept close for long. It is said that such a bad disciple like sandalwood, even if he is one's own son, and not given by another, nor artificial, but born from oneself, born from one's own being, but still possesses the faults mentioned earlier.
