Such counting is said to be the ultimate, with eighty-four thousand thousands, ninety thousand thousands, and a hundred thousand thousands. Seeking suchness through the distinctions of asceticism: wearing matted hair, being naked, touching the head to the ground, or wearing a topknot, abandoning gatherings, entering (practice), those with various signs, desiring manifest enlightenment. Thus it is said. The one with matted hair refers to those who, through the generation stage, create an image similar to a deity, wearing artificial faces, hands, and matted hair made of wood and the like, wandering from place to place. The naked one refers to those who have taken up the asceticism of non-attachment, wearing the clothes of the sky in a madman's guise. The one touching the head to the ground refers to those who have shaved their heads and possess the asceticism of monks, novices, and the like, guarding the place of learning in monasteries and the like. The hair and beard of those dwelling in monasteries should not be allowed to exceed two finger-widths. Thus it is said, their hair must be shaved off as a certainty. The one with a topknot refers to those who keep only the hair on the crown of the head, relying on the asceticism of virtuous conduct or the asceticism of a lay practitioner, guarding the place of learning. Abandoning gatherings, entering (practice) refers to those who, having taken up the merit of cultivation, abandon worldly gatherings, and strive diligently to abandon attachment and the like by meditating on ugliness. In the Hearer's Ground of the Yogacara school, it is also said, how does one possess the merit of cultivation? They are: the alms-seeker, the devoted alms-seeker, the one-session eater, the one who does not take leftover food, the one with three robes, the one who wears felt, the one who carries a duster, the one who dwells in the wilderness, the one who dwells under a tree, the one without shelter, the one who dwells in a cemetery, the constant sitter, the one who dwells wherever. These are the twelve or thirteen merits of cultivation that are firm through alms, robes, and dwelling. Among these, alms-seeking itself can be divided into two types: the alms-seeker who accepts what is obtained and the devoted alms-seeker. The alms-seeker who accepts what is obtained refers to the one who, in order to increase virtue in any way,

The food that is obtained in that way and found in that way is eaten. Diligent alms-gathering is: going from house to house, begging from groups of people, eating the alms that are found in that way and are suitable in that way, and thinking to oneself: I will obtain abundant and pleasing food and drink from this, and then saying "Please give," and not approaching groups of people. Regarding alms, if there is no distinction, it will become twelve types; if it depends on distinction, it will become thirteen types. So, what is called "one-seat eating"? Sitting on one seat, eating until satisfied, and not eating again after getting up from that seat, that is called "one-seat eating." What is called "not taking food later"? Sitting down, not eating food until all the food to be eaten has been taken; and knowing to what extent one can be satisfied, and one should know that, like this, for me, there is nothing more to be done with more food than this. Then, only after taking all the food does one begin to eat, like that is "not taking food later." What is called "three Dharma robes"? Having three Dharma robes, that is, the monastic skirt and upper robe, and the shawl, not wearing Dharma robes underneath except for these three Dharma robes, like that is "three Dharma robes." What is called "felt-wearer"? Not wearing three Dharma robes, any clothes that exceed three Dharma robes, all of them are worn made of wool, and not others, like that is "felt-wearer." What is called "rag-wearer"? Clothes that are given by others, or discarded, or on the main road, or at a crossroads, or at a three-way intersection, or discarded and abandoned on a fork in the road, clothes that are contaminated by urine and feces, or by excrement and urine, or by pus and blood, or by phlegm, whatever is contaminated, removing the unclean part from it, taking the essence, washing it clean, sewing it up, changing the color, and wearing it, like that is "rag-wearer." What is called "aranya-dweller"? Especially dwelling in the last dwelling place of a forest aranya, far away from villages, cities, and towns, like that is "aranya-dweller." What is called "tree-dweller"? Relying on trees, dwelling at the roots of trees, like that is "tree-dweller." What is called "uncovered"? Initially not covered and not veiled.
