Then, this should be examined through reason and scripture. What is meant by "asceticism"? Is it perhaps the practice of keeping long hair, wearing peculiar clothes, drawing three lines, carrying a trident, smearing with ashes, undergoing great hardship, following the moon, etc., as well as raising the head, wearing bone necklaces, begging, sleeping on the ground, going from one place to another, etc., which are widely known through differences in observation and should be practiced? If someone says, "Indeed, it is seen," then seeing is true. However, why not do other things, such as placing bottomless pottery, bundles of grass, swaying objects, etc., on the neck, hands, and feet, making them a burden on the body, a sorrow to the mind, and a cause for the world's laughter? If it is said, "Whatever causes suffering to the body and results in the world's laughter should not be done," then what should be done? If it is said, "Only those rituals that bring about the fruits of enjoyment and liberation and that are explained in the scriptures as having a definite nature," then what is meant by "scriptures"? And what are they like? If it is said, "If it can determine, then it is definite," then what does it determine? Is it the body of the ascetic, or the mind? For the time being, it is not the mind, because it is not reasonable to determine the mind, which is pervasive and formless, for the time being. This dharma is neither corporeal nor pervasive. If it is said, "Because it is related to the dharma as described above, it is of the body," then since bundles of grass, etc., can be accomplished with little effort, why go to great lengths to obtain bones, hair, staffs, and khatvangas, etc.? Those things that are obtained, just like other independent beings, also make those ascetics dependent. Since this is the case, why do those independent beings, like showing the actions of the body, sleeping comfortably, and dwelling comfortably, do the same as the ascetics? The enjoyment that can be obtained merely through the limbs just mentioned is also not attainable by the ascetic.

Is it not possible for others to accomplish what you strive for? If it is said to be for obtaining the unsurpassed kingship and so on, then, from the beginning of taking vows until the end of death, no ascetic has ever been seen to achieve it. If it is said that in order to obtain a vast land of enjoyment that is extremely stable, diverse, and limitless, it is achieved through blessings, and by becoming close to the god of desire, it is accomplished, always pervaded by complete happiness, always possessing the nature of contentment, having characteristics that are incompatible with others, and enjoyment that is obtained at other times through other bodies, if you say so, Emaho! Bound by hundreds of ropes of evil desire, wanting to destroy the body due to the domination of thought, and being controlled by ignorance, this state is worthy of sorrow. Because the peacocks who seek the stainless water arising from generosity, even though they are animals, if the happiness of their minds is analyzed in detail, it is for the benefit of the body itself, therefore they should not be condemned. Ascetics, by enjoying sugar candy and molasses with their minds, the body becomes comfortable, but there is no other change, it is like a flower in the sky. Because these are all just beliefs, therefore, please be silent. Through this reasoning, the asceticism of the perfect yogi is refuted. As it is said in the scriptures: Merely tormenting the body through asceticism does not result in merit, it does not avoid harming others, and it does not benefit others. Disrespecting the great path of the noble Dharma of generosity, discipline, patience, and wisdom, and in a solitary place, going astray, one goes to the suffering of the body. Limbs are entangled by the illusion of suffering, the solitary place of samsara is frightening, and one will obtain a forest filled with limitless beings, which is extremely long. That is what was said. In the tantra called "The Assembly of All the Gods," what is the asceticism of the yogis like? Whenever all actions are performed with a mind that possesses skillful means, is without doubt, and is without conceptualization, this is the best of all asceticisms. What is called asceticism? Through non-conceptualization, in the nature of non-conceptualization, always practice all actions.
