Thus it is said. There are two types of wanting to know: doubting and seeking the truth. Among these, if one doubts and does not believe, then it should be abandoned, because doubt itself will decline. Thus it is said. There are also two types of wanting to seek the truth: those without valid cognition and those with valid cognition. Among these, what is without valid cognition? It is when one does not rely on reason, but merely accepts the truth based on the instructions of others. However, among those who say there is, the most excellent one is not an object of debate, because in this way, his doubts can be quickly dispelled. If one has valid cognition, then it is counted as the third type of knowledge. For the time being, it could be any of the Lokayata, the Shanti, the Samkhya, the Nyaya, the Vaisheshika, the Offerers, the Debaters, and so on. Among these, the Lokayata only speaks of non-existence because of having valid cognition, because for them, there is no other valid cognition other than direct perception, so they are an object to be refuted. Like this, not accepting inference and other valid cognitions, thinking that there is no afterlife, turning away from liberation, and following one's own conviction, they say: "The bones have gone like ashes, how can there be rebirth?" That opponent who speaks like this has already been refuted by other very diligent scholars with attachment.

For those who do not wish to be enslaved by a certain behavior and who detest it, who else is more worthy of trust than you? If I observe the precepts of cleanliness in order to conform to the world, then the world is divided into those who follow the doctrine and those who do not. Among them, those who follow the doctrine adhere to the doctrine, and those who do not seem to be merely blindly following, as they say, "Where the great man has gone, there is the path." If one strives to do so in order to generate inner happiness, then what is the connection? How can the face, hands, and feet, etc., being well adorned, generate inner happiness? If it is said that the aggregation of causes and conditions of external objects, being close to the senses of the body, etc., and the particularity of the increase of mind are the cause, then this is not to be ridiculed. You will be relying on the tenets of my own school. If admitting mind leads to faults, then we have no mind other than that composed of the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. If that is the case, then since the elements themselves are inanimate, the pot and cloth, etc., should be perceived like each other, or become perceivers, or have no perception. If one says that the elements of the body's nature have feeling, then this is admitting mind by another name. If I do not admit consciousness other than the elements of the body, but they themselves are the nature of consciousness, and the dead body is not like that because the collection is incomplete, lacking wind and fire, etc., then just like the form, etc., present in the body, the mind should not be experienced by the senses as "What is this?" Nor can it be said that it is apprehended by self-awareness. It is not reasonable that one object should be cognized by different valid cognitions, because in all cases it appears as "What is this?" Therefore, the pot is not self-awareness in some aspects, and different from that, what appears as "I" is self-awareness. Even though the thing itself and the moment itself are its essence, do you not admit that they are the objects of different valid cognitions? This will also be the same.

English
If asked: Is that so? It is not so, because they are the same entity in the realm of direct perception. Due to the illusion of seeing different things, thinking that things are permanent, those who say that things are permanent without realizing the difference, merely generate trust through inference. For this, there is no illusion of different cognitions arising in the absence of different objects. The former Lokayata (materialist) proponents said that just as liquor made from grains, yeast, and other ingredients produces the ability to intoxicate with the passage of time, the elements mixed with substances such as semen and blood produce the power of mind. To those who say this, it should be said: Are those powers different or not different? If they are different, then what is the relationship between them? If you say they are aggregates, that is not possible, because just like that, this is also like this, it will be pointed out, as has been said before. The example of the power of liquor is also not appropriate, because the power of liquor cannot be observed simultaneously, so it needs to be examined. One who has not tasted the substance of liquor, merely seeing it, will not experience the power of intoxication. When one experiences it, the substance of liquor is not observed because it dissolves in the body. If it does not dissolve, it cannot produce the power of intoxication in the body. In that case, in their view, when the elements of the body are observed, the mind is not observed, and when the mind is observed, the elements of the body are not observed, but they also claim that they can be observed. Those who claim that the body and mind arise from the same cause, and that because the cause is the same, the body and mind, which exist as the object of support and the supported, do not originate from another world, are in fact admitting another form of consciousness. When the body is destroyed, it should not also be destroyed, because it has not been seen that when a wooden bowl is destroyed, the birch fruit is also destroyed, so it is not possible for the supported to change in the same way when the support is destroyed, and the embodied and the disembodied as the object of support and the supported.
