So, what is the mind? It is a virtuous friend, who gives the supreme fruit, so it is said. The rest is easy to understand. There are also other teachings that say, how do you know that the mind is a virtuous friend? Therefore, the question "Subhuti, what do you think?" was asked because he wanted to know that the mind is a virtuous friend. "All dharmas are peaceful and empty" means that all dharmas are without self-nature and empty. "How can sentient beings arise afflictions?" means that sentient beings are also without self-nature, let alone arise afflictions? If the nature of afflictions exists, how can it be purified? Because one abandons the other. If you think it will not change, then why? Peacefulness will not become afflictions, nor will it become purity, peacefulness is free from all conceptual thoughts. Afflictions and purity are conceptual thoughts, son of the lineage, this dualistic grasping is conceptual thought. Although these two are alternately contemplated, they are also conceptual thoughts. So, through peace and emptiness, who can attain Buddhahood? Or through what else can one attain Buddhahood? One does not attain Buddhahood through peace or emptiness, because it is free from its characteristics. If according to the following statement, it will not change either, because the Buddha himself does not exist, and the causes and conditions do not exist. When asked, the answer is "Subhuti, what do you think?" which means, what are your thoughts? Thoughts are very difficult to understand. Sentient beings have been clinging to self and mine for a long time, which means that from beginningless time, clinging to self is clinging to ego. Clinging to mine is clinging to my father, my mother, and so on. "It is so" means that it is so. So, is clinging to self and mine existent? However, clinging to self and mine is empty, which means that in the ultimate truth, all dharmas are empty through clinging to self and mine. So, what is the cause of samsara? It is clinging to self.
