How is the nature of consciousness-only? That which is called "consciousness-only" is now to be explained as it is in its own nature. The word "now" is the beginning of what follows. Now, the necessity of showing only the mind (consciousness) for a while is these and so on. "All these" refers to the moving and unmoving dharmas that appeared earlier. Now, saying "only the mind" is the teaching of the Able One. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is always of the nature of peace in all aspects of body, speech, and mind, because of his virtues. That which is shown as only mind is for the purpose of abandoning the fear of children. "Children" refers to ordinary beings who have not heard the teachings. Or it refers to Bodhisattvas who have not understood the meaning of the eighteen emptinesses, because they are inferior to the Tathagata. Abandoning fear is fearing falling into nihilistic views, or fearing that without accumulating merit for three countless eons, one will not become a Buddha. Therefore, the reason for showing only consciousness is a concluding statement. "That" is connected to the previous text. Suchness is unchanging because it is the realm of the Tathagatas. "Not" means that consciousness-only is not the ultimate truth and does not have its own nature. If there is no consciousness-only, then how can the completely imputed, the dependent, and the perfectly established exist? Emptiness is one, the nature of self, and the mind is thus differentiated. Without ultimate nature, only the mind differentiates into three meanings from the perspective of nature. "What" refers to the completely imputed and so on. Among them, the completely imputed is the grasping of subject and object, merely internal and external discrimination, because it has no self-nature. The dependent is the nature of discrimination, because it depends on other causes and conditions. The perfectly established is without the discrimination of subject and object, because it is completely abiding without change. The three natures thus shown are like the non-self of all dharmas. Saying that all dharmas are without self is not the meaning. To whom is it shown? It is for those who delight in the Mahayana, that is, the Bo-
