All speakers are those who expound on non-Buddhists and so forth. Therefore, non-Buddhists assert that both internal and external things are substantial, while the two Hearers assert that external things are substantial. The Mind-Only school asserts that it is only consciousness. Whatever is similar to that, it is because those views are without inherent existence. Having thus generally taught emptiness as a view, it is also taught that Mind-Only itself is the characteristic of emptiness, such as "Whose consciousness." The Mind-Only school believes that any consciousness that becomes momentary is not permanent, because all moments are impermanent. Therefore, "The impermanent mind does not contradict emptiness," because impermanence and emptiness are inseparable and have the same meaning. Thus, even the view of the Mind-Only school must acknowledge that consciousness alone is emptiness. Furthermore, "The impermanence of the mind of other consciousnesses," and so on, all four views agree that the mind is momentary. The four views are the Vaibhashika and so on, because they are similar in taking refuge in the Three Jewels, selflessness, and believing in impermanence. Therefore, "Those," and so on, means that because the holders of these four views are all sick, it is reasonable to admit that the mind is emptiness. Furthermore, the Madhyamika school stated the reasoning: "Things are without inherent existence, the mind is established at all times," which is the conclusion that the mind that has never arisen from the beginning is only dependent origination and exists in the three times. Therefore, "Because things are without inherent existence, it is said to be without inherent existence." If the aggregates and so on and consciousness are analyzed, they are without inherent existence, so they are without essence. If it is said in words, "Having abandoned dwelling in self," and so on, that is, being consistent with the view of the Buddha, abiding in the view of selflessness, and then establishing the Mind-Only school, this idea is unreasonable. Why? Because "Of all dharmas," and so on, the selflessness of all dharmas, the dharma of emptiness, is not different from its own nature of self-nature. The example is brown sugar and so on, in any case, it will not abandon sweetness and heat. The end.

So, this is from "all," meaning that if any dharma such as the aggregates is analyzed, it is without inherent existence. If all dharmas become emptiness, then doesn't the Madhyamaka view become a measure? If asked this, the answer is "inherent existence," etc., meaning that the inherent existence of dharmas is merely emptiness, but it is not asserted that the cause and effect of dependent origination is empty. If so, will it become permanent? The answer is that "therefore" is said. "Therefore" means that because it is emptiness, the dharma of cause and effect is merely dependent origination. To explain this meaning, "ignorance" etc. are said. The twelve links of dependent origination are also merely the connection of cause and effect, not the relationship of cause and effect. Among them, ignorance is the karma and afflictions of the previous life, which obscures the true meaning. The word "first" should be understood by the word "etc.," that is, including formations etc. "Old age and death" refers to the limbs from consciousness to feeling, because it is suffering. This is called "the end," which is only the completion of the number of twelve links, but it is not the ultimate end, because in the next life there is the nature of the five limbs such as consciousness. If it is not like that, what will happen? The answer is "like an illusion" etc. Among them, the twelve links refer to the limbs of the previous life, ignorance and formation, and the birth and old age and death of the previous life, plus one's own eight limbs, that is, three parts, in order to dispel the confusion of the three times. Alternatively, the limbs of cause and the limbs of effect, that is, ignorance, formation, craving, grasping, and existence, these are the cause. The rest are the effect. The so-called "they assert" means that the Madhyamikas assert that the twelve links are without inherent existence. In this way, through the way of being without inherent existence, "limbs" etc. are said. The existence and grasping of the previous life, from this ignorance arises. From ignorance, formation arises. From formation, the five limbs from consciousness to feeling arise. Then craving and grasping arise. From craving and grasping, existence arises. From this, the birth and old age and death of the previous life arise. Regarding this, the *Abhidharmakośa* says: Afflictions arise from afflictions, action is its basis, from its basis afflictions arise again, this is the order of the limbs of existence. Where...
