Arising from the conceptual thought of "I," it manifests as a great mass of suffering, clinging to "my body," "my speech," "my mind," etc. Due to clinging to "I," one performs virtuous and non-virtuous deeds, experiences their ripening results, and gradually abandons the aggregates as one merges into luminosity. Propelled by the element of wind, one transforms into what is called the "intermediate state" (bardo), and in the five realms, one after another, through the union of semen and blood, one takes a body and will experience the suffering of samsara. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: "Because they do not know such a nature, Those covered by the darkness of ignorance, Having done virtuous and non-virtuous deeds, Will wander in the five realms. Having committed the five heinous crimes and so on, They will be tormented in the hells and so on. Having done virtuous deeds such as giving, They will be purified in the heavens and so on. In countless thousands of lifetimes, They repeatedly obtain (a body), This is the ripening of past karma, The ignorant will grieve over this." In order to show the separation from inferiority, it is said "precious." If one understands the emptiness of mind, it is the cause for the arising of the precious wisdom of the Buddha, therefore mind is called precious. As it is said in the Adhyardhasatika Prajnaparamita Sutra: "Mind is the cause for the arising of wisdom, Do not seek the Buddha elsewhere." So, what is the nature of that mind like? It is merely self-awareness, devoid of all characteristics, without an object of focus. As it is said in the Great Ratnakuta Sutra: "Maitreya, if mind is sought everywhere, it cannot be found. That which cannot be found is without an object of focus. That which is without an object of focus is not past, not future, and not present." And so on. Such a mind, if divided, can be divided into three types: appearance, the increase of appearance, and the attainment of appearance; or mind, mental factors, and ignorance; or emptiness, profound emptiness, and great profound emptiness; or desire, intermediate desire, and freedom from desire. These three ride on the wind, becoming inseparable from the wind, and from the sense gates, in an instant, a moment, a short time, a blink of an eye, a snap of the fingers, they arise and will focus on all objects.

At that very moment, the eighty types of mind with characteristics such as desire will arise in the same way. Furthermore, from the 'Supreme Intent': The wisdom of mere self-awareness, is without characteristics, like the sky. However, there are distinctions in it, namely night, day, and the nature of the boundary. Appearance and the increase of appearance, likewise, the near attainment of appearance. Having explained the three aspects of mind, its nature will be explained. The subtle form, wind, and wisdom, when these are mixed, they become focused on objects. When it possesses appearance, it becomes the mount of wind. At that time, all those natures, become complete without exception. Wherever the wind abides, that nature and the Vajra conduct. Thus it is said. What are the characteristics of appearance and so on? Like the autumn moon's orb of light, spreading and illuminating the stainless sky, likewise, the nature of self-luminous appearance, focuses on all things without exception, hence it is appearance. It is also called mind and emptiness. Like the autumn sun's rays, spreading through the stainless sky, likewise, the extremely clear and stainless essence, focuses on all things without exception, hence it is the increase of appearance. It is also called mind-born and extreme emptiness. Like the darkness falling at twilight, all things of the night disappear from sight, subtle and selfless, without life, effort, or movement, hence it is the attainment of appearance, ignorance. It is also called great emptiness. Although it is so, all three should be understood as being without body, speech, and mind, and separate from all objects of characteristics. Furthermore, from the 'Tantra of Manifest Enlightenment of Vairochana': That mind is completely pure by its very nature, it is neither inside nor outside, nor does it abide between the two. Secret Lord, that mind is not seen, nor will it be seen, by the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas. It is not blue, not yellow, not red, not white, not pale red, not the color of crystal, not short, not long, not round, not square, not light, not darkness.
