By whom is it conferred? The teacher and the disciple, When their minds are in accord, that is the supreme means. Dancing and mudras, songs, and so forth, These too are rightly regarded as means. This means that at the time of empowerment with water and so forth, the disciple should act in accordance with the teacher's intention, and this too is a means. Furthermore, at the time of pouring water from a vase and so forth, dancing, making mudras, singing vajra songs, blowing conches and playing lutes, flutes, waist drums, and paṭaha drums, and having a great assembly of offerings, this too is a means. Although without means there is no result, Since there is no cause for abandoning it, By what should the wise ones Declare the means? And where should it be conferred? Water should be conferred on the crown of the head, The four should be conferred in the four directions, The garland empowerment is also on the crown of the head, The wise have said that these are the places. Thus, first the garland empowerment is on the crown of the head, and after making it a suitable vessel, water should be conferred on the crown of the head. The head ornament is on the right back of the ear. The vajra should be conferred on the back of the neck. The bell should be conferred on the left back of the neck. The name should be conferred on the forehead. And where should the mandala be conferred? The mandala for superior, middling, and inferior disciples, Is said to be flowers, powders, and colors. Thus, the disciple who is superior is in the mandala of flowers. The middling is in the image. The inferior is empowered in the mandala of colored powders. Write without tree defects, arrange any deity of body, speech, and mind, and empower there, this should be known as the mandala. How does one enter the mandala? There are two ways to enter there, namely the teacher and the disciple. In the mandala, the retinue wheel of the deity should also be perfected, and first the teacher should enter. That also requires first generating Bodhicitta, bathing, praying, requesting permission, prostrating, making offerings, praising, confessing sins, taking vows, rejoicing, exhorting, praying, taking refuge, making aspirations, becoming a Buddha-son, gathering Bodhicitta, requesting permission, etc., with this, first let oneself enter. Then begin to let the disciple enter, after making aspirations, as a Buddha-son, bless all places, make offerings, impart instructions, pour water, issue commands, descend wisdom, throw flowers, open the eyes, view the mandala, indicate reality, etc., this is the order of the disciple's entry. What is the order of what should be done before these? First is the land ritual, preparing colors is special, this is before the general practice. This is a brief instruction. What is the land ritual? First is observation and rising, observing giving and not giving, purifying and blessing, holding and protecting. First, observation is above and below, observing the color, shape, size, activity, and characteristics that correspond to which activity, this is observing the land. Then clean the mandala, offer tormas to the mandala deity, the earth goddess, and the guardians of the directions, entrust the activity, this is raising the land. That night, observe dreams, water, and fire, and play, this is observing giving or not giving. With mantras, mudras, and meditation, as well as objects, etc., make the jewels appear in various colors, or make the letters or nature disappear, this is the order of purifying the land. There, wind, water, earth, and Mount Sumeru, etc., possess five colors, as the basis of jewels.
