Because of the arising of conceptualization. In the stages of Vajra recitation, how can one meditate on Vajra recitation in eleven aspects if one has not practiced contemplating the suchness of mantra and wind? To attain focus in the mind, one realizes wisdom by contemplating the three-syllable nature of the mantra entering into the bindu and visarga within the wheel of dharma origination, and appearing together with mudras, and so forth. In the illusory-like samadhi, conceptualizations in the form of twelve similes of illusion also arise. In the stages of manifest enlightenment, contemplation arises of the mudra, vajra, and lotus entering equally, and of contemplating the conceptualizations of attachment, non-attachment, and intermediate attachment. In the samadhi of union, conceptualization of the non-duality of the two truths will also arise. Therefore, meditating on these two stages is not possible to directly realize because it involves conceptualization. If it is said that it is accomplished through definitive knowledge, that is not the case. Definitive knowledge arises after direct perception without conceptualization, not at the beginning. Vajra recitation and so forth, for conceptualization, the direct perception of non-conceptualization will not enter, so what is relied upon for definitive knowledge to arise? The constantly abiding knowledges do not have validity, because they are not object-oriented. Autonomous conceptualization is also not definitive, because it is not valid. Without validity, it cannot arise relying on true objects. If it is said that the stages of Vajra recitation and so forth taught by the teacher are to be grasped by the ear faculty, so they are definitely determined by the sensory direct perception together with definitive knowledge, that is true. However, if it is determined as valid at the time of initial instruction, how is it determined at a later time? If it is through conceptualization, that is true, but because it does not rely on objects, conceptualization is not valid. Alternatively, in order to eliminate that fault, through what the teacher taught, at a later time, it is known by recognizing "that is this," for example, "the grain of Magadha is the same as this place," and "what was seen in Magadha is this same."

That. To this it is said: Recognition is not a valid cognition, because sound and meaning contradict each other. The term "that" refers to the sound of all names that are individually recognized in the past tense. The term "this" refers to the sound of all names that cause the object of direct perception to be recognized. Since the two sounds indicating different times, past and present, have no common basis, it is not appropriate as a characteristic of a particular thing. How is it not appropriate? The sounds that indicate different substances, their meanings pointing to the same thing, that is the common basis. The sound "that" indicates the substance of an object in the past tense; and the sound "this" also individually indicates the substance of an object in the present tense. If it is said that here "that" of "this" and "that" is "this," then it is reasonable on a common basis, then, to this it is said: The term of common basis is made by analysts, but it is not object-oriented. Why? Because once an object has passed, how can its disappearance recognize its substance? And an object that has arisen in this way is also momentary and does not remain, or as a property-bearer, how can it be expressed by the sound of "this"? The sounds that disappear as soon as they are expressed are because their own power has been exhausted. How can one say "what is this" in the same meaning? This is a contradiction of sound. The contradiction of sound and meaning is shown separately through unrelated ways. Even with a single sound like "vase," one has not seen objects being shown separately through the way of mainly pointing to them. Can one see the sounds of objects of the past and present periods being shown separately? Or, it is a mistake to mistake "that" for "this," and not anything else. Because in places like Magadha, the differences in shapes and the superior tastes of cows and grains, etc., that are seen and tasted are different, and these are also different. As it is said: Differences in places, etc., The abilities of substances are different. One of them is known by seeing, In another place, one may not necessarily see the object. Thus it is said. For example, the southern haritaki is chosen, but in other places it becomes a bathing medicine. If the difference of place is temporarily determined, then all things do not exist in their own forms.
