And I, again, arise and cease, and these are merely the different minds arising from the great elements. Therefore, there are the six aggregates of consciousness, and since they accomplish happiness and so forth, and there are virtuous and non-virtuous actions, there are heavens and hells and so forth. In order to realize these, there is also subsequent inference. This is a response to the materialistic worldlings. Those worthy of offerings also say that transformation is complete and that the person is permanent. Their doctrine is as follows: "The entities of the three times, those that exist in the future will come to be in that way; those that have now arisen will become the past; the past will become the future, and the future will become the present." It is said that nothing will change by arising and ceasing, like gold. For example, when an earring changes, the gold also changes, becoming like an earring, but the essence of the gold does not disappear. In this way, yogurt can turn into buttermilk, and buttermilk can turn into yogurt. For the permanent self, there is no fault even in change. As it is said: "When the previous dharma is abandoned for another, when another dharma is taken, the subject of dharma does not move from that, this is said to be complete transformation." To this, it is said: If the nature of moving and not moving, moving is the nature of the permanent self, then why does it completely transform? Complete transformation means that the nature of self is the nature of destruction, the characteristic of impermanent dharma. How can that which is impermanent be a self? If it is said that the self does not perish through the reasoning of gold, knots, and fists, that is also unreasonable, because the difference in gold can be seen. For example, even though gold appears to perish, those who have discerning wisdom will certainly determine the differences made by hardness, color, and so forth. That which produces differences is itself impermanent. If it is said that the self, whether different or non-different, its own nature will not perish, that is also not true, because difference and non-difference are mutually contradictory. If it is different, why is it not non-different? For non-difference, difference is also unreasonable, because non-difference

Since it is said to be one and also said to be other, how am I to examine the "self" due to examining such contradictory dharmas? Therefore, to the worthy of offering, it is answered that the designation of a person is imputed. Shantarakshita says: The permanent, all-doing, all-knowing, with the power of three abilities of desire, action, and wisdom, the lord of the three realms who creates, abides, and destroys, only he is the cause, and everything arises from him and dissolves into him. Whatever objects of fruit are distinguished by the distinction of stability and movement, all those with the nature of destruction arise from him, and he himself is indestructible. As it is said: 'Here there are two states, namely, action and agent. Action is exhausted, but the agent is inexhaustible.' Thus it is said. Combination is, whatever arises from a permanent cause is seen to have the nature of destruction, like the sprout, leaves, fruit, and branches of a poisonous tree. Everything that arises from the permanent lord is of the nature of destruction, but the lord who is the root is without destruction, like space, which is the reason of nature. It is said: If he creates the three realms, then how is he permanent? Because the creator and permanence itself are contradictory. If he is the creator, why does he not create beforehand? Why is it necessary to rely on co-creation? Because the dependent is powerless. Or if there is no need to rely on it, then why does he create it? Like space. Therefore, there is a time of creation and a time of non-creation, and since creation and non-creation are contradictory, it is only impermanent. Or if the lord creates independently, then it is not appropriate to rely on the three abilities mentioned earlier. Or if the ability is not different from the lord, then only the ability is the creator, not the lord. Or if the lord is the creator, then what does the ability do? Or what is the relationship of the lord's ability? For his nature, it will fall into the faults mentioned earlier. Due to the cause-and-effect relationship, the lord arises with ability, so the lord will be refuted. This is also not desired.
