Refuting the Samkhya school. The Vaisheshika and Samkhya schools say that if the nine attributes of the self, which is permanent and substantial, are reversed, and the sixteen meanings of words are fully understood, then the self, established by the four valid cognitions, can be liberated through knowledge. If one cannot fully understand in this way, one will be bound. The answer to them is: the selflessness has the nature of being an object of focus, because it is not found, just like a place without a pot. What are the nine attributes that you say can be liberated through complete understanding? If you think that the five aggregates are the self, that is unreasonable, because the aggregates are impermanent, so the "self" should also become impermanent. Or, it is not impermanent, because it has no common basis with the aggregates, but the self exists in the aggregates and abides in the names of base and based, if you think so, that is also unreasonable, because the base and based of permanent and impermanent are unreasonable. Or, there is a relationship between base and based, but only the relationship between cause and effect is the relationship between base and based, and not others. Just like this, the state of nature that prevents falling by relying on the dependent arises, because the dharma of falling and the dharma of not falling are separate. Producing other states of things is action, because it has the nature of being momentary. Like a fruit in a container. Whatever is the base, that is the cause, so the based should also become impermanent. That is also unreasonable, because the self is permanent. The view that "I have aggregates" is unreasonable, because it will fall into the same fault as before. Because of the extreme production of action, seeing the cause decay, then the "I" should also become extremely impermanent. Those causes will certainly not have results, that is to say, your aggregates of the self will not arise, but will exist repeatedly. Saying "the aggregates are the self", then in terms of the common basis, it will fall into the fault mentioned earlier, because there is no difference. Are the aggregates and the self not different like fire and firewood? If so, that is not the case. If so, what should not arise after the firewood is burned out should be fire, not others. Similarly, I decay.

Since the self arises from the aggregates, there is no self. Or, the self is fully existent and the aggregates do not arise. However, if it is said that the self arises from the fully existent aggregates, then (it is refuted), since there is no self that can be pointed out apart from the aggregates, so even permanence does not exist. Even materiality is unreasonable, because for a material like a rock, the terms bondage and liberation are inappropriate. Therefore, how can the nine qualities accomplish heaven and hell? Dharma and non-dharma, pleasure and pain, desire and hatred, likewise, effort, knowledge, and formations, etc., these are all signs of the existence of a self. Saying this is unreasonable. Because a sign is used to indicate the thing that has the sign, so is it different from that thing? Or is it not different? If it is said to be different, then all things, including dharma, etc., will become signs. Or, if it is not different, then, is it self-cognizant? Or is it other? If it is other, then, because of the dharma, etc., which are unrelated to oneself, there is no connection with the results such as hell and heaven. If it is self-cognizant, then how can it become materiality? This is mutually contradictory. If, like fire and smoke, there is a connection between the self and the signs, then, since the cognition of actions such as dharma will arise, the object of cognition will become the cause, which will lead to the negation of the self, because the arising of the result will cause the causes to perish, so this is the answer to the Cārvākas and the Vaibhāṣikas regarding no-self. The Cārvākas hold that only direct perception is प्रमाण (pramāṇa, प्रमाण, measure), inference is not. Why? Because a person who touches pottery with his hand, when running on a difficult road, if he relies mainly on inference, then falling is not uncommon. Through effort, the wise study inference, while other very clever wise ones argue in other ways. Therefore, there is no inference. Whatever is directly perceived by direct perception exists. As it is said: As long as you live, seek pleasure, after death you will have no rebirth. For death that turns to ashes, how can there be hope of arising again? It is said like this. Similarly, the transformation of the four great elements manifests various phenomena separately, not mind.
