Here, what is necessary is what appears to be accomplished. The necessity of necessity is what appears to be the activity of meaning, which is sufficient to explain in detail. Since sentient beings are led through the door of necessity and so on, in order to show them, five types of individuals should be examined, namely sandalwood and so on, as previously stated. Among them, the so-called sandalwood is a type of pure ignorance, with little learning and causing others to be weary due to arrogance, who cannot accomplish the benefit of themselves and others, because they are foolish. The so-called utpala is one who enters gradually into listening and so on, but is forgetful, because their faculties are dull. Their own benefit does not exist in this life, because it will arise in another life. The white lotus is one who holds listening and so on in their own mind, but cannot show it to others, so they only have their own benefit, because their faculties are intermediate. The so-called lotus is one who can show it to others, because their faculties are sharp. The so-called jewel is one who possesses the perfection of their own benefit and the benefit of others, and is endowed with qualities such as discipline, a type of Bodhisattva, because they are the best of the best in terms of faculties. The four are suitable vessels for the explanation of the conventional aspect, and one is a suitable vessel for the supreme explanation of the ultimate truth. These will be explained in great detail below. Others say that there are four types of individuals: the ignorant, the doubter, the one with inverted intelligence, and the one with definite intelligence. Among them, the ignorant are of two types: those who follow valid cognition and those who do not follow valid cognition. Among them, those who follow valid cognition are those who take the reasoning of others and rely on the path through the stages of listening and so on. Those who do not follow valid cognition are those who rely on the words of the wise and enter the path. Both of these are suitable vessels for the path. Doubters are also of two types, like the former. The doubter who follows valid cognition is one who, by truly stating valid cognition, turns away from doubt and should be placed on the true path, and should be followed and taken care of. The doubter who does not follow valid cognition is the Blessed One, the Tathagata...

should not be accepted either. As it is said: The ignorant are content with happiness, and the especially knowledgeable are even more quickly content. Knowing only a part is like being half-burned by fire, that fire is not even liked by the Buddha. Therefore, this is explained as a place of equanimity. Those with inverted minds are of three types: inverted doubt, inverted ignorance, and inverted knowledge. Among these, inverted doubt is like the Shravakas who say that mantras are not correct, and they should not be accepted by any means, so it is only a place of equanimity. For inverted ignorance, merely by showing the Dharma, one can turn away from inversion and enter the path. Inverted knowledge is also of two types: following validity and not following validity. Among these, for those with inverted minds who know but do not follow validity, no one can lead them onto the path, because they possess inverted views. For those with inverted minds who know and follow validity, there are six types: Samkhyas, Naiyayikas, Lokayatas, those worthy of offerings, those who are peaceful, and those who are speculative. All these moving and unmoving are the twenty-five realities. The five faculties of consciousness are the five senses such as the eye. The five faculties of action are: speech, hand, foot, excretory passage, and secret faculty. The five objects such as form, the five great elements such as earth, and the three internal functions: mind, intellect, and ego. The names of the chief are nature and person. Among these, the twenty-three realities are both cause and effect. Nature is only the cause. Person is neither cause nor effect. As it is said: The root nature is not action, the seven such as the great are cause and effect, the sixteen are only effect, that which is neither cause nor effect is the person. Its meaning is this: the nature possessing the three gunas (梵文गुण,梵文天城体:गुण,梵文罗马拟音:guṇa,汉语字面意思:attribute), which is the cause of all embodied beings, is the chief. Courage, dust, and darkness
