These are afflictions. From the peak of existence to the Avīci hell, the wounds of the six sense sources cause them to flow around everywhere, hence the meaning of "leak." There are four rivers: the river of desire, the river of existence, the river of views, and the river of ignorance. Among these, only the leak of desire is the river of desire. The leak of existence itself is the river of existence, except for the views. The views of the three realms are the river of views, with thirty-six substances. The leak of ignorance itself is the river of ignorance, because it carries away. These four are the four bonds, because they bind, hence the meaning of "bond." There are four kinds of grasping: grasping at desire, grasping at views, grasping at ethics, and grasping at the supreme austerity, and grasping at the self-speaking. Among these, the objects of grasping at desire are twenty-four. The afflictions that dwell in the form and formless realms are the grasping at the view of self, with thirty-eight substances. The objects of grasping at views are thirty. The grasping at ethics and austerity has six substances. Because it grasps, hence the meaning of "grasping." There are four knots: resentment, malice, grasping at ethics and austerity, and the actual grasping that this is true is the body knot. There are five obscurations: desire for desire, malice, sleep and drowsiness, excitement and regret, and doubt. The ten knowledges on the path of seeing are: knowledge of the Dharma, knowledge of following, conventional knowledge, knowledge of the minds of others, knowledge of suffering, knowledge of the origin, knowledge of cessation, knowledge of the path, knowledge of exhaustion, and knowledge of non-arising. There are eight patiences: patience with the knowledge of the Dharma in suffering, similarly patience with the knowledge of following in suffering, similarly one should know about the origin, cessation, path, and the truths of the path. When patience with the knowledge of the Dharma in suffering arises, then relying on the view of suffering obtained by desire, the afflictions are abandoned and thus cease. Knowledge of the Dharma also arises relying on the attainment of the Nirvana of their suchness. Patience with the knowledge of following in suffering also arises.

Therefore, by seeing the suffering existing in the form and formless realms, one obtains and eliminates the afflictions to be abandoned. Subsequently, understanding the followers will also arise by obtaining those achievements of Nirvana. Among them, forbearance is the path of no interval, and wisdom is the path of liberation. Therefore, in the Four Noble Truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, it should be known that there are four types of minds in each. By abandoning eighty-eight latent tendencies with sixteen types of minds, the Four Noble Truths are manifested, and the fruit of stream-enterer will also be obtained. The ten afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation are further increased, namely four in the desire realm and three each in the form and formless realms. Among them, the desire realm has desire, anger, pride, and ignorance, which are combined into one and divided into nine types, namely the differences of inferior, intermediate, and superior. Among them, for the most superior affliction, the most inferior noble path in the inferior category is the antidote. Abandoning six types of afflictions is the once-returner. Abandoning nine types of afflictions is the non-returner. Just as the nine types of afflictions in the desire realm, and their nine antidotes of the path of no interval and the path of liberation, similarly, for each ground, there are nine types of afflictions, and their antidotes should also be known in the same way. Therefore, by abandoning the former and the former, the latter and the latter faults no longer exist, so the one at the peak of existence, even the most inferior affliction is completely abandoned, will become an Arhat. Those who are between the four fruits should be known as those who have entered the path. With the Four Noble Truths such as suffering as the object, the path of seeing with the nature of fifteen moments, and the sixteenth moment of the path of cultivation, in short, through the two paths, afflictions can be completely eliminated. It is said: Because the unseen is seen, the path of seeing, there are fifteen moments in it. The sixteenth is the path of cultivation. And so on appears. Therefore, the wisdom that focuses on the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, with this, one can exhaust afflictions, so it is the wisdom that exhausts. The meaning of uprightness is non-harmony.
