Because the conceptualization of suchness arises sequentially. In the stages of Vajra recitation, as long as one has not contemplated the suchness of mantra and wind, how can one meditate on Vajra recitation with eleven aspects? For attaining focus on the mind, one realizes the wisdom of the three-letter essence of the mantra entering into the bindu and the Tsek within the wheel of Dharma origination, and appearing together with mudras, etc. For the illusory-like samadhi, the conceptualization of the twelve similes of illusion also arises. In the stages of manifest enlightenment, contemplation arises of the equal entry of mudra, vajra, and lotus, and of attachment, non-attachment, and intermediate attachment. For the union samadhi, the conceptualization of the non-duality of the two truths will also arise. Thus, meditating on the two stages is not possible directly because it is with conceptualization. If it is said to be accomplished by definitive knowledge, that is not so. Definitive knowledge arises after non-conceptual direct perception, not at the beginning. Vajra recitation, etc., for conceptualization, non-conceptual direct perception does not enter; relying on what will definitive knowledge arise? The constantly abiding consciousnesses are not valid cognitions because they do not have meaning as their object. Autonomous conceptualization is also not definitive because it is not a valid cognition. The absence of valid cognition is because it does not arise relying on true objects. If it is said that the stages of Vajra recitation, etc., taught by the teacher are to be apprehended by the ear sense, so they will be determined by sense direct perception and definitive knowledge, then, although it is true, if it is determined to be valid cognition at the time of close instruction, how is it determined at a later time? If it is said by conceptualization, it is true, but because it does not rely on meaning, conceptualization is not valid cognition. Or, in order to eliminate that fault, in the later time taught by the teacher, it is known by recognizing that it is this, for example, whatever grain of Magadha is, that is what is in this place, etc., and whatever Magadha

If it is thought that what is seen is that, then, in response to that: Recognition is not a valid cognition, because sound and meaning contradict each other. The term "that" refers to the separate recognition in the past tense by the sound of all names. The term "this" refers to the sound of all names that enable the recognition of manifest objects. Since the two sounds indicating different times, past and present, do not have a common basis, it is not appropriate as a special characteristic. How is it not appropriate? The common basis is when sounds that indicate different substances refer to the same meaning. If it is said that the sound "that" indicates the substance of the object of the past time, and the sound "this" also separately indicates the substance of the object of the present time, then here, the "that" of "this" and "that" is "this," so this common basis is reasonable, to this it is answered: The term of common basis is analytical, but it is not object-oriented. Why? Because the object that has passed, due to its disappearance, how can its substance be recognized? If the object that appears in that way is also momentary and does not remain, or as a subject, how can it be expressed by the sound of "this"? The sounds that disappear as soon as they are expressed, because their own power has been exhausted. How can it be said that "what is this" is used in the same meaning? This is a contradiction of sound. The contradiction of sound and meaning is separately indicated through unrelated ways. Even a single sound such as a pot has not been seen to separately indicate objects through the main way of use. Have you seen the two sounds of the objects of the past and manifest times separately indicate? Or, thinking that "that" is "this" is just an illusion, and not anything else. Because in places like Magadha, the shapes and superior tastes of the seen and tasted cows and grains are different, and these are also different. As it is said: By the differences of places, etc., the abilities of substances are different, one of them is seen by seeing, in other places it is not certain that that object can be seen. For example, the southern haritaki can be used as medicine, but in other places it will become a bathing medicine. If the difference of place is temporarily determined, then all things themselves
