It is. Similarly, since the aggregates arise from the decay of the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self), there is no existence of the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self). Or, the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self) is completely existent, and the aggregates do not arise. However, if it is said that the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self) comes into being after the aggregates are completely existent, then the answer is: since no self (Sanskrit: ātman, self) other than the aggregates can be observed, there is also no permanent self (Sanskrit: ātman, self). Even being inert is unreasonable, because for inert things like rocks, the terms bondage and liberation are not applicable. Therefore, how can these nine qualities accomplish heaven and hell? Dharma and non-dharma, pleasure and pain, desire and hatred, as well as effort, knowledge, and formations, are all signs of the existence of the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self). This statement is unreasonable. Because a sign is used to indicate the thing that possesses the sign, is it different from it or not? If it is different, then all things, including dharma, etc., would become signs. If it is not different, then at that time, is it self-awareness or other-awareness? If it is other-awareness, then dharma, etc., which are unrelated to oneself, would have no connection with the results of hell and heaven, etc. If it is self-awareness, how could it become inert? These two statements are contradictory. If there is a connection between the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self) and the signs, like fire and smoke, then the actions of dharma, etc., would be cognized, and therefore, the object to be cognized would become the cause, which would lead to the negation of the self (Sanskrit: ātman, self), because the arising of the result would cause the decay of the causes. Therefore, the statement that there is no self (Sanskrit: ātman, self) is correct for the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas. The Lokayatas (materialists) believe that only direct perception is a valid means of knowledge, and inference is not. Why? Because when one touches with the hand and feels pain, and when running on a difficult path, if one relies mainly on inference, then falling is not uncommon. Through effort, some are satisfied with the conclusions drawn from inference, while others, who are very clever, prove it in other ways. Therefore, inference does not exist. Only those things that can be directly observed through direct perception exist. As they say: As long as you live, seek pleasure, and after death, there will be no rebirth for you. Death will turn into ashes, and it is impossible to be reborn. That is what they say. Similarly, the transformation of the four great elements produces various things.

Each appears separately, and there is nothing else called mind besides that. For the sake of accomplishing enjoyment and liberation, subsequent inference is the valid means of cognition. If it is said that the complete transformation of the great elements is the same, but movement and non-movement are unreasonable, then it is also said that just as wine produced from the complete transformation of certain grains has the ability to intoxicate, so too, the components of the body born from parents will give rise to the power of mind. Things like wood are not produced in that way, so there is no mind. The complete transformation of the great elements is only the same. That is also unreasonable, because the great elements are matter and mind is not matter, so those cognitions having the same cause with each other is unreasonable. If the cause is the same, then everything will become mind or become without mind. If there is no cause, then it will become eternally existent or eternally non-existent. As it is said: Without a cause, not dependent on others, therefore, it will be eternally existent or non-existent. Things arise from dependence, even among hundreds. The meaning of other causes, that dharma will transform. Arising from the outside is causeless, the result is determined and does not change. Thus it is said. Mind and the great elements are without difference and have causes without difference. If I do not admit that mind and the great elements are different, but if it is said that that is their nature, then this is also not true, because mind and the great elements are objects measured by different valid cognitions. For example, what appears separately by the direct perception of the sense consciousness is the great elements. What appears separately as oneself by the direct perception of self-awareness is mind itself. This and oneself, the valid cognitions of sense consciousness and self-awareness, and the things to be measured, are different from each other. This mere difference or the cause of difference of dharmas, that is, having contradictory dharmas or the difference of causes. Thus, Sugatas, you see that different valid cognitions intervene on one thing. For example, the thing itself and moments, etc. For example, apparent
