If it is said that it is neither non-existent nor existent, and that it is mixed like fire and fuel, then how can there be a self? Thus it is said. The meaning of this is: it is not reasonable to say that the self is the aggregates, because by the nature of that connection, like the aggregates, the self also becomes impermanent. The position of the logicians is that the self is permanent. In order to eliminate that fault, if one asserts the position that the self possesses the aggregates, then at that time, the relationship of the basis and the based of permanence and impermanence will not be established. The relationship of the basis and the based is not of permanence and impermanence. Thus it is said. If it is asked, if the basis is permanent, then are the based phenomena impermanent? It is said: the relationship of the basis and the based will not be established. The relationship of the basis and the based is the relationship of cause and effect, because the based is not reasonable since it is not something that can be benefited. That which can be benefited and that which benefits are the relationship of the basis and the based. If the cause benefits the effect, then it must benefit with the qualities that it possesses, otherwise it cannot arise, so it definitely benefits; and the effect is also like that, if it has not taken the qualities that the cause possesses, then it will not arise. Therefore, if one accepts the relationship of the self and the aggregates, and the relationship of cause and effect, then at that time, since the aggregates are impermanent, the self will also become impermanent. If the self is permanent, then the aggregates should also become permanent. But this is not seen, because it contradicts the tenets established by oneself and others. Furthermore, although the self is the basis, it is also the cause, so if the aggregates arise as the effect of the self, then they will be destroyed. In both positions, it becomes impermanent. If it is said that the self exists in the aggregates, then at that time, as before, the relationship of the basis and the based will not be established. Although it is like that, since the aggregates are the basis, and because they are the cause, the effects will definitely not arise, so the aggregates cannot give rise to the self, so the self will not change. If it arises occasionally, then at that time, they will eliminate the self. Whatever arises occasionally is not permanent, like the appearance of a traveler, so it becomes impermanent.

If it is thought that the aggregates and the self are inseparable, like fire and firewood, then, just as firewood turns into charcoal, the self, which is called fire, obtains the nature of the aggregates. If it is said that this is a nominal term for the aggregates, then extreme impermanence is admitted. Therefore, these four views are not good. Similarly, after refuting the self in the form aggregate, it should be understood that the assertion of mutual self in feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness is also refuted. This refutes the view of the perishable collection arising from the twenty views of the mountain peak. Whoever claims the entirety of samsara, the wheel of existence, as the self, through the reasoning of the mistaken cycle of names, refutes that view. The great self of Isvara, the creator of all, and the destroyer of all, manifested by the three powers, is worthy of examination, because if he is the creator and destroyer of all, why does he not create or destroy all at once? If he does not do so, it is not gradual, because that is impermanent. Because at the time of creation, he has the power, and at other times he does not have it, so it is dependent. Dependent power does not exist, because it depends on simultaneous action, like a pot. Therefore, Isvara does not exist. Accomplishment and the agent are necessarily nature, time and constellations, and Isvara himself, asceticism, merit, Yama, and the finisher are various names of what is manifested, some think. If it is said that the accomplisher produces these things and destroys them, then he is the sole cause of wandering, which is also unreasonable, because there is no other transformation in the three realms transformed by the habitual tendencies of one's own actions, because that has already been refuted. The actions of body, speech, and mind, good and bad, are done by oneself. Worldly people experience their results. There is no other agent, because it has been said. If the agent is analyzed, it does not exist. The aggregates of the continuum of afflictions, actions, and birth are samsara, which is called the three realms. Like carrying a burden
