Defilements are so called because they follow along. From the peak of existence to the Avīci hell, leaking everywhere from the wounds of the six sense sources, hence the meaning of "leak." The four rivers are: the river of desire, the river of existence, the river of views, and the river of ignorance. Among these, only the leak of desire is the river of desire. The leak of existence itself is the river of existence, except for the views. The views of the three realms are the river of views, with thirty-six substances. The leak of ignorance itself is the river of ignorance, because it carries away. These four are the four bonds, because they bind, hence the meaning of "bond." Grasping is fourfold: desire grasping, view grasping, ethical discipline and asceticism supreme grasping, and self-speaking grasping. Among these, the substance of desire grasping is twenty-four. The defilements abiding in the form and formless realms are the "self-view grasping," with thirty-eight substances. The substance of view grasping is thirty. The grasping of ethical discipline and asceticism has six substances. Because it grasps, hence the meaning of "grasping." The four knots are: resentment, malice, ethical discipline and asceticism supreme grasping, and the manifest clinging to "this is true" is the body knot. The five obscurations are: desire for desire, malice, sleep and drowsiness, excitement and regret, and doubt. The ten knowledges on the path of seeing are: knowledge of the Dharma, knowledge of following, conventional knowledge, knowledge of the minds of others, knowledge of suffering, knowledge of arising, knowledge of cessation, knowledge of the path, knowledge of exhaustion, and knowledge of non-arising. The eight acceptances are: acceptance of the knowledge of the Dharma in suffering, similarly, acceptance of the knowledge of following in suffering, similarly, knowledge should be understood in arising, cessation, the path, and the truths of the path. When the acceptance of the knowledge of the Dharma in suffering arises, it is abandoned by seeing the suffering of obtaining desire, and it will cease depending on the defilements. The knowledge of the Dharma also arises depending on the attainment of such nirvana of those. Suffering itself is the following

Because the forbearance of knowledge (Tibetan: ཤེས་པའི་བཟོད་པ་) arises, therefore, by seeing the suffering that exists in the form and formless realms, the attainment of abandoning afflictions is obtained, thereby ceasing them. The subsequent following knowledge (Tibetan: རྗེས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ་ཤེས་པ་) also arises in the same way, through obtaining the attainment of those nirvanas. Therefore, forbearance is the path of non-interruption, and knowledge is the path of liberation. Thus, in the Four Noble Truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, it should be known that there are four minds in each. By abandoning the eighty-eight latent tendencies with sixteen types of minds, the Four Noble Truths are manifested, and the fruit of stream-entry will also be obtained. The ten afflictions to be abandoned through meditation are further increased, namely four in the desire realm, and three each in the form and formless realms. Among these, those in the desire realm are desire, anger, pride, and ignorance, combined into one, and divided into nine types, namely inferior, intermediate, and superior distinctions. Among these, for the most superior affliction, the noble path of the lowest of the inferior is the antidote. Abandoning six types of afflictions is the once-returner. Abandoning all nine types is the non-returner. Just as the nine types of afflictions that exist in the desire realm, and their nine antidotes, which are called the paths of non-interruption and liberation, similarly, in each realm, there are nine types of afflictions, and their antidotes should also be known in the same way. Therefore, by abandoning the former and the former, the faults of the latter and the latter do not remain, therefore, the one at the peak of existence, even the lowest of the inferior afflictions, can become an Arhat by completely abandoning afflictions. Those who dwell between the four fruits should be known as those who have entered the path. With the Four Noble Truths such as suffering as the object, the path of seeing, which is the nature of fifteen moments, and the path of meditation, the sixteenth, are summarized, and afflictions can be completely abandoned through the two paths. As it is said: Because of seeing what was not seen, it is the path of seeing, in which there are fifteen moments. The sixteenth is the path of meditation. And so on. Therefore, the wisdom that focuses on the path of seeing and the path of meditation, with such wisdom, can exhaust afflictions, therefore it is called exhaustive wisdom.
