Desiring to speak about actions such as killing, it is said: Listen, how is that very path? And so on, thus the fourth chapter begins. Completely abandoning two and non-two, this indicates the abandonment of one and many. The sound of the river refers to attachment and so on. Having spoken of the means to guide those who are drowning in the ocean of samsara: Possessing the characteristics of the signified and the signifier. The signified refers to the person. The signifier refers to the method. The characteristic means to manifestly signify. Consciousness is to be contemplated by wisdom. This means that there, having placed wisdom on consciousness, the wisdom of the signifier spoken of combines action with the mind of the signified. Thus, it is said in the "Holy Lankavatara Sutra": Action is accumulated by the mind, wisdom distinguishes, and consciousness completely manifests. Those embodied beings who are drowning in the middle, liberation is called a sign. This is the concluding statement that one should be liberated by the above method. Desiring to clarify that very point, it is said: By wisdom, one should examine the knowable, one should examine the realm of the knowable, and so on. The fifth lifetime realized, the yogi is delighted in giving. Regarding that, the fifth lifetime realized, this means that the path of the Tathagata is taught. The thought is like this: Among hundreds of thousands of yogis, how many will or will not go? Having meditated on emptiness, and having made the body without desire and so on, one should plant the seed that arises from below the body, as it is said: On the field of emptiness and so on, on the body, the intelligent one plants the seed. Desiring to expand that very point, it is said: For example, having burned down the house of a low caste person with fire, and so on. Regarding that, having made a great dwelling in the place of gods and so on, to make great means to increase. The meaning is like this: Just as having burned down the house of a low caste person, one builds a supreme house of gods and so on, similarly, having burned the body blessed by desire and so on with the fire of wisdom, in order to benefit sentient beings, one generates compassion as the cause, and in order to generate the blessed body, one plants the seed of the dharmadhatu only for that purpose.
