Since action itself is knowing, the meaning of external objects will not be seen. Those who assert the existence of external objects do not want it that way either. Therefore, the two exist mutually exclusive, because the nature of knowing does not become the nature of what is to be known. Knowing itself is not illuminated by others, but illuminates itself, because it is not the nature of illuminating what is to be known. If it were its nature, then it would fall into the faults mentioned earlier. If knowing itself is not bright, then it would become the fault of the nature of what is to be known. If it illuminates others, then the other must be an even greater illuminator than it. Furthermore, it either illuminates itself, or becomes an illuminator of others. Otherwise, it cannot be said that this illuminates the other, nor can it be said that this is bright. It will become its own bright nature, even if it is not considered bright, it is still an illuminator. Otherwise, it cannot be established, because its illuminating nature is difficult to understand, because without grasping the illuminator, it cannot be established as an illuminator. Because grasping the illuminator itself is understood as bright, otherwise it cannot be established. If understanding it is also understood through the illuminator itself, then it will fall into the fault of mutual dependence. Then, why is it also the nature of things? Because its nature will bring others closer, just as when mixed with a red substance, a white substance will also become red. Similarly, a black substance will become black, green will become green, and so on. The light of a lamp also illuminates, becoming an image with light. If one's self is not the nature of an illuminator, then how can it, which is not clear itself and to others, become clear? Because the unclear nature of earth will not make a pot in the dark, etc., clear, therefore it will fall into the situation of not taking a lamp, etc. If it is said that it illuminates others by taking the nature of other brightness, then it is not so, because it does not possess the nature of an illuminator. Because similarly, for that which is not other,

Since it cannot manifest its own nature, how can it manifest other things? If it is the nature of being manifested by other things, then it must also be manifested by other things, and this would be endless. If there is no object to be manifested and no subject to manifest, then all beings would become blind and mute. Moreover, whatever is 'this' and 'not this,' etc., since there are no terms for establishing and refuting place, time, and nature, all terms would be cut off. But this is not the case. This refutes the opponent's view. If consciousness is the nature of self-illumination, then how can it illuminate the knowable? Because the nature of consciousness does not grasp the knowable, and the nature of the knowable itself does not grasp consciousness. These two are completely different, as has already been proven above. If it is argued that even if they are completely different, just as red substance and white substance mixed together become red, or just as cloth and other things in the dark become clear when near a bright object such as a lamp, so too, the knowable becomes clear when near consciousness, that is not correct. Because the example of consciousness and the knowable being completely different is not established. Because the so-called example is the nature of the knowable, not the nature of consciousness. These two are completely different, and the nature of consciousness does not appear as the nature of clarity; the nature without its nature is the example. Whatever becomes an example is because the meaning established by valid cognition is established as an example, and it also exists differently from valid cognition. It is manifesting, so how can it manifest what is not its nature? Thus, since there is no established example, the desired meaning cannot be established at all. All beings would become deaf, mute, and so on. Because of this, is consciousness produced or not produced? On the side of being produced, it arises from having causes such as form. If there are no such causes, it will not arise; it will become with form, without form, or with the form of another. Among these, in the first case, the relationship between its nature and the thing that arises from it is the relationship between the knowable and consciousness.
