English

A village refers to a settlement of hundreds of households, etc., located away from cities. A city refers to a place connected to all regions, known as a large city. A town is known as a market. A region refers to the possession of land rich in snow-capped peaks and medicinal herbs. A territory refers to the land near those places that pays taxes to the king. A royal palace refers to the place where the owner of the land resides. 'Even residing is acceptable' refers to praising the place of residence. Residing in these places, one should benefit beings by causing rain, etc. Or, in these places, one can engage in activities that no one knows about. Furthermore, to indicate the places most suitable for offering tormas, it is said that even residing at the gate, in the gatehouse, on the main street, in the alley, at the crossroads, at the three-way intersection, between villages, and in shops is acceptable. A gate refers to the outside of anything. A gatehouse refers to the place that serves as a shelter for the gate. A main street refers to a wide road. An alley refers to a path close to a house. There is also the term 'water alley,' which has the same meaning. A crossroads refers to the place where four roads meet. A three-way intersection refers to the center where three roads meet. Between villages refers to the area relative to two villages. A shop refers to a place where commerce gathers. The word 'ན་' is a particle indicating the gathering of a place. 'Even residing is acceptable' refers to performing the activity of torma offerings there, because it is a place where dakinis, spirits, flesh-eaters, and pretas wander. Now, to indicate the places for tsokhorlo (gathering circle), it is said that even residing in an empty house, on a mountain, by a river, in a forest, and in dense thickets is acceptable. An empty house refers to an uninhabited city. A mountain refers to a place where birds nest, a mountain cave, and a mountain valley, etc. A river refers to the sandy shore of a large river, or the edge of a large ocean. A forest refers to a place abundant with trees. Dense thickets refer to a place covered with dense trees. These places are considered extremely secluded. Therefore, ordinary individuals, shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, etc., should practice in secluded places. Why is that?

Then, why is that? Because revealing secrets to individual people leads to fundamental downfall, and in other scriptures it is also said: "Those who are true monks, Those who delight in realization, Those who have become old, Should not be shown such things." Thus it is said. And why is that? Because here, enlightenment is achieved through the door of desire, but for some, it becomes like the second path, so it can only be abandoned. Therefore, the Blessed One also said in some tantras that it should be abandoned, while in others it is said that liberation is achieved through enjoyment, and in some it is forbidden to kill, while in others it is said that it can be killed. So, what is it like here? It should be said that here, it is desired that a special result comes from a special cause. It should be known that the purpose is achieved because forms and other desired objects have become special objects of enjoyment. Otherwise, those who want to abandon will not achieve the purpose, because they cut off the senses and objects, and desire other things. As it is said: "Unbearable ascetic vows, Make the body emaciated and bring suffering, Suffering distracts the mind, Distraction causes accomplishment to shift elsewhere." Thus it is said. And again it is said: "Unbearable asceticism and austerity, If practiced, will not lead to accomplishment, If all desires are enjoyed, If practiced, it will quickly lead to accomplishment." Therefore, it is because the purpose is achieved through desire. If subdued by means, then enjoying afflictions will not turn into poison, so it is said to be the nature of afflictions.

It is said that even the poison of (desire) cannot cause one to fall. It is also said elsewhere, "The fool is bound, the wise are quickly liberated. If one meditates on Bodhi, all these will be reversed. Whoever is bound by ignorance will eventually be liberated. He will be liberated by that very means, and attain happiness through the power of wisdom." It is also said, "No matter how fierce the karma that causes beings to suffer in unbearable hells, if one possesses skillful means, one will be liberated from the bonds of samsara." It is also said, "For those who possess wisdom and skillful means, afflictions become limbs of Bodhi." And so on, it appears extensively, therefore, the fruit of practice and liberation arises, which is the determination of the Bhagavan. As it is said in such a solitary place, even enjoying food and other enjoyments is due to the difference in location, etc. If it is not so, faith should be increased there as well. A three-story assembly hall should be built there. First, the gathering of heroes and heroines, as well as brothers and sisters, should also be gathered. Second, are the varieties of music. Third, are the varieties of food, etc.
