If there is no laziness and pride, then why not do what the Blessed One said in the Hevajra and other scriptures, which is to first understand the precepts of a monk and then study the Mahayana? Therefore, if there is a Bhikshu Vajradhara, then the teacher who resides at home should not be relied upon by the monks, and the king should not rely upon him in any way. Similarly, after thoroughly examining the teacher: "Beggars and those in red clothes, those of evil nature, from shame, with those who are adulterous, making prostrations and offerings, for the Buddhists, it will not decline," thus it is connected. Similarly: "When the red clothes are seen, the sinful ones become angry, delighting in the teachings of the heretics, at that time Buddhists are fond of white clothes." Here, the Buddhist teachings are not always in white clothes, just as in the temple of Manjushri, if monks and novices fail, then white clothes are given, the skull staff is taken away, and they must be expelled from the temple. The Vajra Master is also the same, from the temple of the mantra practitioners, by the decision of the king. In this sacred land (India) also, how can a householder who wears white clothes be the teacher of those who hold the skull staff, and the one who consecrates temples and so on? If a Bhikshu Vajradhara exists, but relies on those who have obtained the opportunity to harm, this is a great insult to the Sangha, and it will surely destroy the classification of the Sugata. Therefore, in any case, one should thoroughly examine and rely on a teacher who is free from faults, and abandon a teacher who has faults. This is the necessity of speaking about the complete examination of the teacher. Now, with the words "profound" and so on, for the sake of empowerment of wisdom and knowledge, the characteristics of a noble disciple are taught. Here, in the way of mantra, there are two kinds of disciples: one who seeks to accomplish the siddhi of Mahamudra, and the other who seeks to accomplish worldly siddhis. Those who seek to accomplish the siddhi of Mahamudra, for the purpose of meditating on the path of emptiness, through the empowerment of the vase and secret, etc.,

It should be gathered purely. Whoever seeks worldly achievements should be truly gathered with seven empowerments for the purpose of meditating on the wheel of mantras, mudras, and mandalas, which is the cause of accumulating merit. The lowest is not to be truly gathered by empowerment, but to be truly gathered by the precepts of a layperson, which is certain. Here, whoever thinks of the profound and vast Dharma, the nature of emptiness and compassion, is the one who thinks of the profound and vast, the supreme disciple. Being happy with the guru's instructions means being free from the fourteen root downfalls and being happy with the ten virtuous Dharmas. Having the attitude of generosity means completely abandoning all busyness and not depending on material things. Knowing the qualities means having faith in the Three Jewels. Seeking liberation means not depending on worldly achievements. Respecting the tantras means protecting the vows spoken in the tantras. Having an unwavering mind means that the mind is not moved by worldly paths, which is having an unwavering mind. Obtaining Suchness should be kept extremely secret, which means that after obtaining Suchness, it should be kept secret until one has personally experienced it, which is extremely secret. Abandoning evil companions means here those householder teachers who seek wealth, as well as ascetics, and those who enjoy monasteries and temples, these are evil. Their friends are the paths of the ten non-virtues, and whoever abandons them is abandoning evil friends. Such a person is a great disciple, and a very wise guru should gather him as the cause of wisdom, the empowerment of wisdom, and so on. The word "etc." also refers to the cause of the fourth empowerment. Others, the middle ones, again become the cause of merit, that is, those who possess intermediate qualities should be truly gathered by the seven empowerments. The lowest, if they rely on the guru and do not slander him, should be truly gathered with the five training grounds as the cause, which is the instruction of the Bhagavan, that is, the student...
