When ignorance ceases, so does action. When action ceases, so does consciousness. When consciousness ceases, so do name and form. When name and form cease, so do the six sense sources. When the six sense sources cease, so does contact. When contact ceases, so does feeling. When feeling ceases, so does craving. When craving ceases, so does grasping. When grasping ceases, so does becoming. When becoming ceases, so does birth. When birth ceases, so do aging and death cease. Thus, the twelve links cease, and because the laws are not in accordance, the limbs of the Blessed One should be known to be without obstruction. If yogis become Buddhas by destroying the desire for change, then why did the Thus-Gone One destroy the four—the Lord of Death, the aggregates, the afflictions, and the son of the gods? Therefore, one does not become a Buddha by destroying the desire for change. Here, some people's thoughts may arise, so it should be said. Here, what is said by the deluded, that the external demons were destroyed by the Thus-Gone One, is not so, because the former and the latter contradict each other. Here, if one is a Buddha first and then destroys the demons later, then the Buddha does not have unobstructedness, because the demons can harm him. If one destroys the demons first and then becomes a Buddha later, then why don't other samsaric beings destroy the demons without becoming Buddhas? If one says that one can destroy the demons all at once, then one does not destroy the demons all at once, because one cannot become a Buddha at the moment when there are demons, because the mind is obstructed. At the moment when one is a Buddha, there are no demons, because all obstructions are exhausted. Therefore, the body, speech, and mind of sentient beings, and the nature of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, are the four demons. Among them, the obstruction of the body is the demon of the aggregates, the obstruction of speech is the demon of the afflictions, and the obstruction of the mind is the demon of the Lord of Death. The external manifestation of ignorance is the demon of the son of the gods, and the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are near.
