Regarding the display of differences: The so-called "I" is conceptual thought. Therefore, it should also be abandoned. Having said this, one should abandon "I am pure, I am impure." What is the reason for this? Because it is said, "There is no change." The realm of reality is without defilement and without separation from defilement, therefore there is no change, and there is no doubt that one is tainted by defilement. For this reason, it is said, "There is no desire for a pure place." Because there is no impurity, there is no desire for purity. Now, it shows detachment from the beginning and the end. The beginning is the beginning of samsara. The end is nirvana without remainder, because there are no remaining aggregates. Yogis should meditate on these two extremes as being detached from space, like space. Now, a compassionate person who is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence should not turn away from the benefit of sentient beings. Just as with an illusory person, sentient beings are either existent or nonexistent, and one should bestow the teachings of fabrication and empowerment. Because there is no difference from illusion. In this way, because it is free from the four or sixteen elaborations, the luminous nature of mind is called wisdom. Having explained the nature of wisdom in this way, now the nature of skillful means will be explained. It is said, "Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, it benefits sentient beings." Because the mind is self-aware luminosity, it appears as whatever sentient beings desire, therefore it benefits sentient beings. The so-called "great compassion that accomplishes everything" means that all of the container and its contents are manifestations of the mind's luminosity, therefore it is called accomplishing everything. It itself is free from the suffering of illusion, therefore it is compassion. Moreover, because it is focused on the realm of reality, it is compassion without focus. Because it becomes the field of activity of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, it is called "the place without focus." Having shown the nature of skillful means in this way, now the nature of union will be shown. In this way, among the three meditations, the first meditation has five characteristics: the characteristic of union, the characteristic of the path of direct perception, the characteristic of qualities, the characteristic of temporariness, and the characteristic of being free from temporariness. Among these, the characteristic of union is becoming one with wisdom.
