These are things like "Gasmé Ching." Desire is supreme joy, that is, the very desire to produce fruit. However, it does not aim at the very nature of perfect enlightenment. Detachment is a special joy, that is, the very destruction of fruit. Therefore, it also does not aim at the nature of enlightenment. The Middle Way is the joy of the first stage of bliss. As the eighth chapter says, the Middle Way is merely joy. How is this the Middle Way? Because it is inferior in itself. In the world, whatever is inferior is called middling, for example, saying middling lifespan and middling stature. That joy also does not aim at that very nature of perfect enlightenment. Thus, desire and detachment are merely enlightenment, because they aim at fruit. However, they are not perfect enlightenment. The Middle Way is not even enlightenment, because it aims at touch. As the sixteenth chapter says, "No beginning, no end, no middle." This will be explained, the meaning of no beginning, no end, no middle is that, having abandoned those three moments, one should fully understand the joy that arises simultaneously from other than them. That itself becomes the nature of fruit, and is called simultaneously arising enlightenment. Because it is to be known by oneself, that wisdom itself is also called fruit. Because of turning towards the manifestation of the enlightenment of the fruit of true bliss, it is called enlightenment. How is this to be fully known? Because supreme joy is wanting to produce fruit, and the characteristic of the destruction of fruit is special joy. Abiding between them is this supreme wisdom, and its characteristics have been well explained by the very words such as simultaneously arising. Furthermore, it is said that the three are abandoned, which is unreasonable, because the Dharmakaya of perfect enlightenment, without beginning or end, is itself simultaneously arising, so how can one think that it is not present in these three joys? Therefore, it is said, "Or else," and so on. "Or else" and "whatever" are synonyms. That itself is the lord of all, meaning that the simultaneously arising one is the master of all.

Therefore, it is in accordance with the three joys. That which is empty of both common happiness and the two is the meaning of being uncommon. Or, in another way, complete abandonment is separation from the three joys, which are the special characteristics of self-awareness, not in accordance with these. It is precisely because of being separated from these special characteristics that it is said: This has completely abandoned the three. Therefore, this is not unreasonable. Although this has been well explained, in order to clarify the coemergent joy, it is said, "special," and so on. The first is the prior of the special. If that is the supreme joy itself? The answer is no, it is said: The three joys are completely abandoned. This shows that it is the subsequent of the supreme joy. Thus, in the sixteenth chapter, it will be explained by "supreme, extreme, special, first, middle," meaning that relative to the extreme of supreme joy and the special joy, it is called the middle. It will be clearly shown in the thirteenth chapter. The nature of coemergent joy. The extreme and special are prior. All of these will show that the extreme of supreme joy is the extreme of extreme union. The special joy is born after that, and is called discrimination. Between these two, the wisdom of the main body is the bliss of coemergence, which is without object and without elaboration. Thus, by meditating on the coemergent joy that is correctly indicated, the four samadhis that appear like clouds, like illusions, like dreams, like sleep, and like waking up will gradually appear. Regarding this, the verses are spoken: first, and so on. As long as one meditates with the correct union that includes meditation, and the coemergent joy does not manifest, then this will appear like a cloud, meaning it appears like a moon covered by thin clouds. When it manifests, it will be accomplished, and if it is accomplished, it will appear like an illusion, that is, transformed by the mind.
