Because of having steadfastness, it is necessary to practice. "In the cause of enlightenment, not thinking, meditating," it is said. Enlightenment is the wisdom of knowing all aspects. To attain it, when meditating without thinking in the cause and basis, it means learning to contemplate the meaning of non-elaboration by completely abandoning the manner of grasping and being grasped. If asked, does the mind abide in that way at that time? No, it does not. "At that time, I only pursue discriminations," it is said. When learning in order to accomplish the great wisdom of the mind of enlightenment, "At that time, I only pursue discriminations," it is said, because one is a beginner practitioner, my mind only runs after discriminations. Discrimination is running and inclining towards various unreal discriminations generated by unreal pervasive conceptions. That is the meaning. The word "only" indicates being content with other ways. Therefore, because it is not another object, only discrimination relies on the basis of the mind, not others. For example, only an archer holds a bow, not others, like that. The question raised here is unreasonable because "Rivers, oceans, mountains, etc., these are all transformations of the mind," it is said. Because there is nothing other than the mind, it is not possible to establish the supported and the supporter. Although it is so, there is no contradiction because the Sutra school asserts that both the object and the mind are established. In order to show other ways in which one cannot eliminate discriminations even when abiding in meditation, "Like a dream, all beings, by whatever means, do not grasp anything," it is said. A dream is something that can appear even without a cause that has been previously experienced; it is deceptive. For example, in a dream, there is no object of attachment such as a beautiful woman, nor an object of hatred such as an enemy, but they appear. "Similar" means similar in manner to that. What is similar? Sentient beings, that is, things that abide in this state of samsara, which is without essence. How is it similar? By whatever means, one does not grasp anything.

Or, whatever the holders, they do not hold or take whatever is called the object or the object to be taken, whether coarse or fine. For example, in a dream, one sees various kinds of lovely and unlovely objects of the realm, and although they become objects of attachment, because that is the nature of illusion, in reality there is nothing at all, just as if it did not exist. Even if one meditates, one is only acting in the realm of the enemy of the conceptual mind, the taker and the taken. The meaning of this sentence is not only that one hears and knows that all dharmas are like dreams, but even if one repeatedly meditates and becomes accustomed to that meaning, one is still under the control of conceptual thought, which is the meaning of the word "also." So, what is conceptual thought like? It says, "The taker," and so on. The taker, because it is able to distinguish, is the taker, that is, the mind of the holder. Because it is to be understood and comprehended, it is the taken, that is, the objects to be taken. The conceptual thought that thinks that those are real is the conceptual thought of the taker and the taken, meaning those who have the conceptual thought of the taker and the taken. That itself is the opposite of selflessness and non-conceptualization, so it is an enemy, like the realm of such an enemy of conceptual thought, I always act and am dominated by it, or am destroyed by it, even if I know that it is false like a dream, and generate aversion to the object, and have already meditated, I will still be destroyed by the collection of conceptual thoughts from beginningless time, that is its meaning. In this way, conceptual thought is difficult to reverse, and one's own antidote is weak.

Please look upon me who has become foolish, grant me immaculate views, and for those who live by this, grant me the right view that is a medicine, not in harmony with errors, and not tainted by sins. If someone asks, are these generated by one's own efforts? What do I cherish, and what do I contemplate? That (what is cherished and contemplated) itself will initially vanish. Thus it is said, like this, for the immeasurable things that are cherished and regarded as the core, or for the antidotal paths corresponding to the Paramitas, when contemplating and examining which path, that path itself will initially vanish and be destroyed, this is to explain that in reality, in order to destroy the collection of afflictions, no matter what antidote is relied upon, because it is weak, it will be overwhelmed by the opposing side. Now, in order to show that the faults are one's own problems, it is said again, or the self that committed in the past is the fault, what can the Bhagavan do about this? Thus it is said, or this (fault) is a fault arising from oneself, what can you do? Connect it like this. When was the fault committed? Committed in the past, that is, from the beginningless time, in the past lives passed down, because it is generated by non-true pervasive thoughts, it has accumulated the habits of inversion. What? My fault is like this, relying on the antidote and regarding it as the core, even if seeking, it is controlled by wrong views, etc., for these defects of faults. Bhagavan refers to subduing the four maras, or possessing the six qualities such as freedom, that is, the Buddha. What can you, the Bhagavan like this, do? This is difficult to correct, because being controlled by afflictions and wandering in the realm of demons is one's own fault, and sentient beings are the masters of karma, so they can only enjoy the fruits of their own karma, the giver of happiness and suffering is not the Bhagavan, therefore the sutra also says, I am only the field, not the seed. In order to show that meaning with a metaphor, it is said again, even the sun that dispels all the darkness of the world.
