Commentary on the Praise of Confession Buddha of Peace Commentary on the Praise of Confession Buddha of Peace ༄༅། །In Indian language: Deshana Stava Vritti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Praise of Confession. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Here, at the time of making praises, those who compose praises speak based on the three aspects of the cause and effect of the Buddha, and the state of the characteristics of accomplishing benefit. And the one who makes praises also has faith, much learning, and attainment of the state of endurance. These are the three aspects. Among these, this mainly relies on the cause of much learning, relying on the state of accomplishing benefit, wanting to speak of the way to confess sins through praising the qualities of the Bhagavan. King of Medicine, unequaled protector of beings, source of all virtues free from faults, taking refuge in you and always remembering, I confess by speaking of my own faults. These and other words are spoken. King of Medicine means the chief of physicians, because he knows the science of healing sentient beings who are tormented by the disease of afflictions and go to bad destinies. Therefore, he is called unequaled, because among Brahma and Shiva and others, there is no equal means to this. Furthermore, he is the one who shows the supreme path to the beings of the three realms, therefore he is the protector of beings. If that is the case, then are the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also protectors of beings? To make a distinction from that, it is said "free from all faults", because attachment, hatred, and ignorance and so on are faults that hinder the arising of true wisdom in the mind stream, and they are completely separated and definitely abandoned together with their imprints. Is it only by being free from faults that one becomes a protector? For that reason, it is said "source of virtues", because it is virtue that should be learned and cultivated, which refers to strength and fearlessness and so on. The "source" of those is the synonym of "the basis of arising". It is only because of these causes that it is worthy of refuge, therefore it is protection, that is, the place of reliance, from sins and so on.

Cutting off the side of ignorance, the Bhagavan Buddha, who possesses great and incomparable qualities, is the supreme refuge, therefore called refuge. You, refers to the object perceived by manifest consciousness. Focusing on faults means focusing with a mind of manifest faith and confessing sins after making them manifest. Why confess? Because it is mentioned that it is always present, the mind stream is tormented by the disease of afflictions, and has the characteristics of grasping at self and what belongs to self, and one should not do things like disturbing the winds that should be done, because this is not temporary. The transformation of one's own sins refers to the decline of the nature of one's own mind's afflictive power, and the ways in which it transforms into other states. Whatever can be expressed in words, such as joining palms and other bodily gestures of respect, should be confessed, not concealed, but expressed openly. This is the meaning to be expressed. Therefore, this first verse shows how one's own actions should be expressed, as well as the connection, necessity, and the necessity of necessity. That is to say, confessing one's own sins through praising the qualities of omniscience is what should be expressed, and the words of praise are the way to express it. These cause-and-effect relationships are the connection. Turning away from afflictions by knowing the path is the necessity. Relying on it and gradually attaining Buddhahood is the necessity of necessity. In order to show that transformation of sin, it is said: Like a river that is very difficult to cross, with fierce waves of bad thoughts and analysis, when stirred by the crocodile of afflictions and clinging, my own mind has no peace. And so on. It means, O Bhagavan, my own mind has no peace, no freedom from afflictions. How did it become without? It is said to be like a river that is very difficult to cross. Similarity refers to metaphor, just as people who are swept away and disturbed by the strong currents of a river experience great suffering, so too in the realm of samsara.
